I have the same issue and have been told by the dealer and an independent shop that it is very expensive to fix if it is out of warranty because it involves a lot of labor. Looking at the TSIB that was posted, I now understand - that looks like a lot of work.
Another option which has been recommeneded is to simply disable the retraction. Does anyone know how to do this without taking it to the dealer?

Is the noise in the tilt or the telescoping. more your wheel up and down with the control and see if it makes the noise.
The telescoping is complicated and expensive, but the tilt is easy and inexpensive. There are two different motor/gear sets.
The LS400 works the same way and there has been an issue with the tilt function starting with noises.

I know that on the tilt motor that it was just a matter of disconnecting power to the tilt motor. I seem to recall something similar on the telescoping but have no details. you may want to look on the LS400 forum or post the question there.

I too, had the grinding noise in the retraction process. I downloaded the TSB so I could get my head around the details of the operation. During a New York State Inspection and service, I asked that the problem be investigated on my 2001 LS430 by the dealer, Bay Ridge Lexus in Brooklyn, NY. It required dropping a panel and lowering the steering column to lube and grease the parts. Labor was 45 minutes and the charge was around $100.00 dollars. Has been working quietly ever since.
Good Luck!

The indie Lexus repair shop that maintains our cars didn't charge anything for making LPS settings changes when I had my 2000 LS400 in a few years ago for its first front brake job. I was told that I was the first person who had ever asked for LPS setting changes in the 10+ years they had been in business.

Mine did it, too. I saw the TSB, and had the dealer fix it. My bumper to bumper warranty had expired, and it cost me $230. However, I complained to Lexus about it being embarrassing when others rode in my "quality" Lexus, and they refunded my money!!!
If my car had still been under the 4/50, it would have been fixed for $0.

Did you disconnect the battery too? Preventing airbag deployment...

What is the fix for the tilt problem?

This works if you can hear the internal tilt gear turning but the wheel doesn't go up and down.
