Default 430 or 460 (The Mother thread.)

I was going to get a 430, but during my first test drive I didn't like the seats and thought they were too hard.

Then I tried the 460 and I really thought they are much more comfortable.

the one in the picture has 75k miles on it and I can get it from a lexus dealer with a 12mo bumper to bumper warrantee for 33k in San Jose CA area where any car tends to run about 5k higher than other parts of the country.
The service record is good and here is the vin# JTHBL46F675009266

I just can't find a cpo one that is less than the high 30s

Get the 460, you won't love the car unless you love everything about it. Not liking the seats is a huge factor as you do need to use them every single time.

Try test driving a couple more before you decide. If you feel the same get the 460 but hurry at that price the 460 won't be avail. Long

I owned both a 2005 LS 430 and a 2008 LS 460. I still own a 1996 LS 400 as well so i guess you can say i'm quite familiar with the Lexus LS family.

I ended up selling my 2005 LS 430 about two months ago. The LS 430 was not a bad car but everything on the LS 460 is a lot better than on the LS 430. Definitely worth the extra money.

One is more similar to a Mercedes and one is more similar a BMW.

Go with the LS 460 you will not be disappointed.

In terms of the LS 460 the first thing that is apparent is that the build quality is a lot better.

Starting of the bat with the simple chrome around the windows it is 1 piece for each door and diecast not hollow/thin piece of metal.

Then you got a timing chain vs a timing belt
8 speed vs 6 speed
100 horsepower more
Better fuel economy compared to the LS 430
The mark levinson in the LS 460 is better than the Mark Levinson in the LS430
Double/thermopane windows on the front and for the L all windows are double/thermopane
Leather is a lot better in the LS 460
Brakes seem much more powerful
Less Crevices and a lot more airtight Interior-wise
Parking hold feature is nice
Ride is significantly different between LS 460 and LS430
etc, etc, etc.

On the LS 460 you are looking at you can definitely get more off of it, especially if you are paying in full.

It has been for sale for almost 3 years now:

02/08/2008 - 75,476 miles - Vehicle listed for sale in San Jose, CA for $34,988

http://www.vin-history.com/vin/JTHBL46F675009266.html

Looks like they are only giving you $2,000 off.

You should easily be able to pick it up for $30,000 - $31,000.

Default 430 vs 460

How do you know it has been on sale for 2 years?

Is the website that you gave the link to more reliable than the Lexus service website?

How do you explain that according to the Lexus website service records it had 26,000 miles on it in 3-2008?

Its two different pieces of information.

Lexus isnt going to show you when the car was for sale. Service record has nothing to do with ownership changes or car being for sale. Its just showing you strict maintenance done on the car.

That website is showing current miles on it not what it was 2 years ago. Its matching the information you told us. Its just showing the most recent listing for sale.

I'm not trying to prove or disprove you, i just noticed some information and feel it would be useful to you in terms of getting the LS 460 for $30,000-$31,000.

Default 430 vs 460

thank you !!!

Would you buy the car for 30-31k? What other steps would you take?

How can you get a mechanic, (I usually use AAA), to check out the car without buying it?

I have noticed that most non Lexus car lots will do that for you, but Lexus won't when I have asked them, unless it sits on their lot for a long time?

I assume you could write up a contingent contract stating that what would have to be wrong with the car to back out of the deal?

If the only choice is a 2007 460, I'd get a low mile 04-06 LS430 instead of a 07. No way I would not buy a hugely expensive used car that had its engine top end repaired/replaced by the local dealer techs.

But if you really feel the seats fit you better in a LS460, I would recommend you save a little more money up and buy a later model year like an 09.

Seems odd they'd replace both idler pulleys (the ones associate w/ the timing belt/chain) so early? You don't usually replace those until doing the timing belt/chain. Also, the radio, fuel delivery system, plus the valve springs were all done. This engine has been torn down already twice in 3 years!

To be honest after owning 4 Lexus's some things are important to me.

Its really subjective though you might like different things.

I like Navigation which plays in with the backup camera.

Mark Levinson is awesome. I would never buy a Lexus without it. Three out of my four Lexus had Mark Levinson and my first 1996 LS 400 didnt because it wasnt available. Nakamichi was the premium stereo back then.

Soft close doors are really nice to have but not a must for me like Navigation and Mark Levinson.

Depending on how loaded up the LS 460 is I would go for it at $30,000 if it has Navigation and Mark Levinson and then i would add an extended warranty.

The miles are kind of high, so it may not be a bad idea to consider an extended warranty.

Also probably the most important thing to check would be to have someone qualified to make sure the car hasnt been repaired after an accident. I never trust a Carfax or Autocheck. I have seen to many of them with a clean Carfax or Autocheck and the car has been repaired.

Considering that you are getting a 1 year warranty i would be looking more at previous body repairs.

That would decrease your resale value when you are selling and also there can be potential rust later.

I would start looking at grabbing a car paint testing gauge such as this one for $99:

http://cgi.ebay.com/CRASH-CHECK-CAR-...item4152e69ce8

This way you can easily tell if the car has been previously repaired.

At $99 free shipping you really cant lose out and if you decide not to buy this LS 460 you will be able to use it on the next one you look at. Unless you have some experience in body work then dont get it, otherwise it's worth grabbing it.

My amp went out on my LS 460 for the previous owner, but i was glad because the new one is that they replace it with is actually better. In terms of the valve springs i didnt get that done yet.

Idler pulleys being replaced is kind of strange. At 26,000 miles thats a little weird.

I would definitely look at getting some extended warranty. Remember to never purchase an extended warranty off the bat. Thats not a smart move. You have 12 months of warranty through the dealer and just double check that you can add an extended warranty later. Normally you can always add an extended warranty right before your original warranty runs out.

Its worth $30,000 if it has Mark Levinson and Navigation.

Just double check that you will be able to get an extended warranty before your 12 month warranty runs out.

As long as that extended warranty is possible you wont need a mechanic. If anything goes wrong they have to replace it free of charge.

Otherwise just start looking at other LS 460's if you they don't allow you to get an extended warranty.

as far as i know the 460's come with NAV stock... i heard and read that somewhere. CORRECTION; THE L's come with nav stock.

on my 430UL i have the extra leather, soft door closures, rear seat amenities, double pained thick glass, nav & backup camera, ML stereo (not that good in my opinion), soft seats package (my opinion), PCS, bluetooth, rear & side rear sun shades, plus others.

Click on autotrader 08 under 35 k (AT-111E6C7E) and there is a one owner, owner for sale L Touring model newly listed for sale with 29 k miles. Guy is saying all the right things and you have to like his Mods. You would save a boatload of cash even shipping it to your door in the long run. I would be careful and insist on knowing and talking to the dealer or garage he had it serviced at though to be the least bit interested. Then have the guy take it to a body shop to check the paint, then if all checks out it is a great deal. Probably 1500 to ship to CA.

Personally I would stay pretty far away from an earlier 460 at most any price. I really think Toy/Lex quality dropped a ton around the mid-2000s redesigns of virtually all their vehicles. It was maybe still not quite at its peak with the LS430, but relatively close - the LS430 was a slight downturn from the last 400 but there's a big drop to the 460.

If you do go for it, get a serious warranty. With relatively few repairs this inexpensive car can quickly cost far more than a peach.

Just MHO of course.
