LS460L Gas Mileage
Autoweek reports that their long term test LS460L is averaging 28 mpg on the highway. Great for a big, powerful, V-8 engined car. How are real owners doing? I'm considering replacing my 06 RX400h with a SWB LS460, and mileage will be a minor factor in my decision.

I just completed a 450 mile road trip. I used the adaptive cruise control (which is my favorite feature) set at about 83 m.p.h. My mileage was 27.4 (first leg) and 28.5 mpg return trip. The trip was mid michigan ( pretty flat ) and light traffic, all expressway.

Commute to work everyday -
5 minutes @ 70 MPH on freeway
10 minutes @ 40 MPH on an extremely windy road
2-3 minutes @ 70 MPH on freeway
5 minutes @ 40 MPH on slightly windy road. Stop and go.
driving style - spirited
mileage - 18.5 MPG
A rough estimate of what I should be getting going by the 18 city / 27 highway mileage numbers would be
(15/23)(18)+(8/23)(27) ~= 21 MPG
I may not be getting precisely what is advertised for this car (in terms of gas mileage), but nevertheless, I'm still extremely satisfied, especially after living in a horror story with my last Mercedes. I ended up spending 65% of what I paid for the car in maintenance fees over 12 years of ownership, which is just unacceptable. And, it had poor gas mileage to boot.

Your mileage reports are unbelievable!
I’m getting about 22.5 on my MB ’08 E-350 with easy driving. (100 less hp.)

You can bet that the staff at AutoWeek that are reporting a 28mpg average on the highway are not doing much "easy driving". It will be interesting to see what their long term overall average is. It is apparent that at least on the highway the LS460 is something special in gas mileage.

never buy another one. But, I decided to try one more and got this
08 E-350 Sport. Time will tell. I don’t get hung up on ANY one brand.

I just went from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and back and averaged about 85-90 mph both ways.... My mpg average after the fill up for each tank was about the same at 26.6 mpg... I only had about 25 miles of city driving the whole trip and was in stop and go traffic for only about 20 miles total of that trip since it was mid-evening on Friday and coming back daytime on Saturday.
I was very impressed with the MPG!!! My usual average around Vegas with about 70% city driving is 19.1 mpg.

In three months I have logged over 14.5K miles on my 460. Average speed (per display) is 50mph, with a 20-mile daily commute in traffic mixed in between a lot of 80mph cruise control drives of 4-12 hours round trip (mainly flat interstate driving). Highway MPG is consistently 29 and 30, with a little better than half that (16-17 MPG) in town. I have a heavy foot and eat through brake shoes...
