Lexus dealer has a 'free loaner', they have a more expensive showroom, and cleaner garage, the guy who takes my car from me wears a tuxedo, they have flavored coffe and fresh cookies in the waiting area . That is why Lexus charges more than Toyota. I do not mind paying a premium for service (which is one of the reasons why one picks Lexus over Toyota), but common, labor charges will be 6-8 hours, so even if Lexus charges 20/hour more, that would only explain 120-160 more for the service (heck most of the parts they use are all Toyota (filters fluids, etc). I bet they charge twice as much for parts and shop materials (when I had to buy a new battery, the Lexus dealer wanted 125, and the toyota dealer wanted 75.. I ended up buying from autozone for 60 with better warrentee) as well as do more things than what is mentioned in the manual. This week I will stop by the toyota dealership and compare the 60K services to see what the differences are. Funny thing is that some Toyota dealers will 'refuse' to service the Lexus because they do not want to 'step on the Lexus dealers toes' but I bet that is because the owners probably have a Lexus dealer in town.

Default Toyota/Lexus service rates

Toyota and Lexus charge drastically different rates for the same service. The 60,000 mile service for my 2000 LX 470, including everything but the synthetic oil that I bring with me, cost $708.54 at the Toyota dealer. This includes everything that is on the list in the Lexus owner's manual for the 60K service. By comparison, the 45,000 mile service at the Lexus dealership cost $293.89.

Taking your Lexus to the Lexus dealer for service makes sense if you have a warranty issue that needs to be addressed, but if the vehicle is out of warranty, or you don't have a Lexus dealership nearby (the closest one to me is over two hours away), then the Toyota dealership is more than capable of performing the same service, usually at a lower cost.

Just did 90k service. I dunno if the 60k was done properly since I just got the car. I got water pump, belt, plugs, diff, tranny, oil, brake, AHC, coolant fluids, air, oil filters and some other stuff for $1k at my indie.

Is this an accurate price (it includes spark plugs)?
Should I consider taking it to an independent shop?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help.
I just recently had the 90,000 mile service done on my LX 470 at the Lexus dealer and it cost me $1400.00. That included changing plugs and timing belt. If I remember correctly the 60,000 mile service cost me right at $600.00. I did check with the toyota dealership but the difference was only $40.00, so I went to the Lexus dealership.

To follow up. I did the 60K checkup, the final cost was ~900 including taxes. The bulk of the cost was labour, but the platinum spark plugs were about 18 bucks each ($154) (I have no idea if that is the real price). That ended up being about $700 less than the Lexus dealer for the exact same service. So they did not wash my car or give me a loaner, but hey $700 bucks is a lot. Apparently the 90k service can cost a lot because they change the belts (I already had mine changed because they saw micro cracks....Arizona is hard on the belts).
