Post 80k and over what to look for on 98/99 LX470

Hello Gang,

Have questions for you guys with 80K and over,
How have you liked your LX470 with the high miles?
Can you post any problems to check and look out for?
How's the suspension? any problems interior exterior features
you guys care to share with a prospective buyer
reason I ask I'm looking at purchasing possibly 98 or 99 instead of
purchasing a New GMC Denali(I know, no comparsion)
Just like to know what should I lookout for.

Help a soon to be LX owner, tell me what to look out for.

thanks everyone

djr,

I have a '99 LX470 with mileage in the range you were asking about.

I have been extremely please with the build quality of my LX with the exception of the audio system. The Nakamichi AM/FM/CD player is a malfunction waiting to happen if you use the CD player much.

Also be aware of a major service at around 90,000 miles.

I have 3 other vehicles but my choice to drive 75% of the time is my LX470.

It does like to drink lots of premium fuel.

Thanks Ice,

So Ice, what does the 90k service do? timing belt fluids etc, yeah I know about the
gas milege wouldn't be a big thing(i expect that) just worry about any major problems
with the high miles, suspension problems engine, trans things of that nature. I could deal
with the cd problems hell I'll just listen to the radio all the time(just kidding).

djr,

You are correct on your guess for service. It included all of those. My dealer charged approx $2000 for all of the service work.

I would recommend calling your local dealer to find their cost for doing the 90,000 mile service. If you were looking to buy it might save some money to buy one with it already done or use the cost of it as a negotiating point.

My dealer told me they have very few transmission related problems on this year LX.

When I have my '99 detailed it looks brand new. People riding with me never believe me when I tell the year and miles. It isn't as fun to drive as my corvette but with the spring traffic just how much fun is there driving 40 mph?

Ice,

I will do just that call my dealer to find out what entails with the 90k service, I will be buying,
probably will keep until the 06 or 07 comes out, (new design),
the one I found is a 99 with 89k buying locally for only $20k ,what do you think of that price?
didn't have the timing belt done yet. looks and ride quite well. it's the black onyx.

by the way ice you said u have a corvette, I have been driving my brother's 01 vette and man
does it fly, that's why I have to get something slower beore I kill myself in that car,it seems
like I do 90mph or more in that car everytime I drive it.

djr,

Wow, sounds like a great deal to me. There is no way I'd sell mine for such a low price.

Heh, heh, you are right about the corvette. It is so easy to go fast without realizing it. I've thoroughly enjoyed mine but I still drive my LX most of the time.

Good luck with the purchase. I don't see how you could go wrong at that price. The depreciation at this point is so much less per year. I think it is a great value buy if it is in good shape. These vehicles are made so that one could easily put many more miles on them during their useful life.

Default 80k and over what to look for on 98/99 LX470

I have a 99 LX470 with about 103k. I am the second owner. I purchased it in Sept '02 with 55k. I just replaced the starter 3 months ago and last year I had the steering wheel groaning fixed Jan '03.

Let me know your specific concerns or questions.

My 99 Landcruiser (same car) has 109k and runs like a top. The only thing that I've done to the beast is to have the timing belt/water pump replaced at 96k. I also replaced the starter contacts, which is a VERY VERY common problem at around 100k with our cars. If anyone needs info on how to do this, I did a write up on a Land Cruiser forum, and can give a link.

The common symptoms of bad starter contacts is difficulty starting the car, especially on cold starts. You turn the key, and the starter engages, but doesn't crank. After 3-6 turns of the key, it suddenly starts as if nothing was ever wrong.

An unscrupulous shop will tell you that you need to replace your starter completely, when all you really need to do is spend $25 for the contacts.

The fit and finish on my TLC is spectacular. It is solid, and rides and feels like a new car. IMO the TLC/LX 470 is the best big SUV you can buy.

Red face starter on lx470

Hello guys,

I was curious about the problems that occur after the 90k mark, but from I
have read from you guys seems pretty rare, I can deal with the cd problems,
I will be buying the 99 lx470 on monday and shall report back to you guys, can't wait

md: you said you had the starter replaced, was it having the problems that rph
described? I shall see if the gentlemen had the starter replaced when I pick it
up on Monday, has everyone had problems with the steering wheel groan?
I own a 95LS also and have never had the steering wheel groan problems.
I have already made an appointment at my local lexus dealer to have 90k service done
plus timing belt replaced, quoted me $1200 for everything not bad.

will keep you guys informed

Same here, I don't have any problems yet but it's always helpful to have it handy just in case.

Yes it was having the same problems. It was under warranty so they replaced it. The groan was a warranty item as well.

Other than the warranty items, routing maintanence.

Good luck.
