Default freshly cleaned LX

Hey,

I just spent the day with my siblings detailing my LX. I used paint remover to chrome the grill awhile back so thats why its not black.

Here are some pics (^_^)

Question

rob,

are you saying just a regular can of paint remover took the black paint off of the grill?
is it totally chromed meaning any blemishes or scrathes anything, please advise because
I want to try that. if a regular can of paint remover did this, I will definitely try it.

let me know very curious about this.

Robert -- sweet rig. Good to see it w/o the black grill. Now...if you'd only make those few little mods...lift, sliders, fr/rr bumpers...

djr73999-
I used the strongest foam spray on paint remover I could find. I first used a weaker kind and it did not work very well. There are some scratches on my grill because I rubbed too hard with the steel wool pads to try to get the paint off. Once I used the stronger stuff and let it sit for a bit, most of it came off easily with a tooth brush. There are still some spots I missed because I did a half assed job of it. The vertical parts of the grills are somewhat messed up but not from the paint removal. After so many years of use, gravel and things make marks on the vertical parts of the grill. Not that noticible unless you are up close since they are recessed back into the grill. Remember to remove the grill and that rubber seal at the top before proceeding. The paint remover can damage the car's paint and melt that rubber seal.

dougjohn-
I am still a n00b with that stuff but at least I know what sliders are When I get the fundiing (not sure when due to school) I will definately get the ARB bumper.

Thumbs up

rob

I really like the chrome look on your LX, and definitely want that look on mine, I'm going to Home Depot to
find the best can of paint remover and will take the grill off and try it, I then I will use the toothbrush effect
that you described instead of the steel wool, I have the woodland pearl color closest to gray, and think the
chrome adds flair to the style of the LX. yours looks good. I like it.

Looks clean robert! My wife took the LX to get it detailed today, I'll try to get a few pics of it before it gets dirty!

Nice looking LX. You just gotta clean the wheel wells for the ultimate show car look.

Hello

1. Has anyone chromed their forest green LX? Wonder how it looks.

2. Also, once the black paint is removed and chrome exposed, what is needed to be used to clean off the paint remover?

3. Any step-by-step instructions available for removing and refixing the grill?

Thanks

electro992,

You are correct. It has been a while since i have visitied this forum. I had 03 LX which was sold due to various problems (perhaps my old posts would still be there?) and I purchased a bmw instead (although the bmw has its share of problems too, its seats have better back support, which is important for my back condition). However, the lexus was still somewhere in the back of my mind and always turned my head to see one passing by on the road. Therefore, I have purchased a 99 LX as a second car.

As you can imagine, I do miss a lot of the upgrades that the 03's have and while i do not want to spend any money on upgrades, the chrome grill appears to be the cheapest way to enhance the look.

Since posting the last message, I did manage to remove the grill and 85% black paint has come off with paint stripper (although the stripper vapors gave me crazy head aches). I will continue today hopefully and let's see how it goes.

Are there any other enhancements we can to with spending little or no $?

its good to be back.

thanks

nice job digging up a old thread when there is already a new thread started on this.

1998-2002 LX470s with the dark grey/black paint on their grilles........YES THERE IS CHROME BEHIND THE PAINT. Take a look at one of the rock chips in your grille, you will see the chrome behind plus if you look around by the chrome ring, you can see that it was painted.

03-05 Might, but i never actually looked at that grille.

06-07 grille WILL NOT FIT ON A PREVIOUS MODEL YEAR! THAT MEANS 05 AND OLDER!

His problem is that you're asking a lot of questions that already have answers. It's just good manners when you join a forum to Search for answers before posting your questions.

Resurrecting old threads isn't as bad as starting new ones, but let's review:

Back up cameras - already answered in other threads
Grill - already answered
Xenons - already answered
Podvin's LX for sale - already posted
DVD players - try Crutchfields
LX or GX - already several posts
Steering problems - ok post
Rims - ok post
IS Accident - we don't care about IS's

Look, I'm not trying to be a jerk either, but 6 of your 9 threads you started were either answered already or were questionably worth posting.

Just try to think about what your asking and whether or not it may have been asked and answered already.
