Any opinions out there on which vehicle is a better buy. A 1996 LX450 with 85,000 miles in very good/excellent condition ($17,500) or a 2001 Land Rover Discovery with 36,000 miles in Excellent condition ($22,500).

Although there were many improvements to the Discovery series II from the first gen LC Disco, it's still not up to par with the LX 450.
And -- as someone else mentioned, for the price of the Discovery, you could get a LX 470.
The 450 will be more reliable as well.

Ford is the parent company of Land Rover.
Toyota is the parent company of Lexus.
I think you will find the build quality of the Rover is subpar compared to that of the Lexus. From what I've read the Disco's reliability - even the Disco II is in the tank. They do have some cool features like "hill descent assist" and I always like the rear moon roof and side windows.

thanks for the replies, they are exactly as I expected. The LX450 has a clunk when you stop, sounds like a u-joint but they are tight. Any ideas on the severity of a noise like that?
Thanks,
Terry
