Default Snow/Winter Tire

howdy all,

with the coming winter months im looking for some good winter/snow tires for the LX. i have been reading on this site for a little headsup info....

http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/faqs.html#doneed

does anyone have anything to offer? any good experiences? bad experiences? we get quite a bit of snow around here (sun valley, ID)....most of the driving will be on rural roads >50mph.....freeways/hiways are far from us....any feedback?

regards,
terry

I use regular old Goodyear tires bought at Wal-Mart and they have worked brilliantly the past 2 years. I don't think that you really need snow tires on the big rig, but I may be wrong.

Terry,

Here's an old thread I had bookmarked that might be useful.

thanks again RPH!! ill look into those tires for if we get as much snow this year (El Nino?) as we did last winter they will come in handy!

By the way the tires that I use are size 265/75R16

It is not the exact size as the original, but I didn't notice any difference other than the speedometer may read a slightly lower speed than you are traveling. At a total cost of $400 for a set of 4 it's the best buy out there. The tires did well in a 9 inch snow storm from St. Louis to here (200 miles).

Default Michelin Cross Terrain

We have a '00 LX470, and have installed a set of Michelin Cross Terrains (275/70-16--I think...whatever the OEM size is), and have had them for a year now. We live in California, but we have a condo up at a ski resort in the Sierra Nevada so we go up to the snow often.

The tires have performed great in both wet/dry/snowy/icy conditions. Feels very stable. Also, extremely quiet too--which was an important consideration for us. (we've had pirelli scorpions before, and we could hear the tires on the freeway).

Treadwear rating is at 700, which is great (esp. since these tires are not cheap!). Hardly any wear after 10K miles or so.

I now think very highly of WalMart tire service. I just got a flat today on my SC300 after running over a big nail. I bought the tires in 9/2002 and had 9k on them and they replaced them free of charge. They stand by their road hazard warranty!

well we just got dumped on with 33+ inches of new snow......great for skiing, bad for traveling....unless you have a LX470!!! even with the OEM tires, it seems like nothing can stop this beast! great car in OEM trim for moderate snowfall! no need for special tires as i see it.

regards,
terry
