Default wheel bearing

hey guys i am gettting my rotors and pads and getting the brake fluid replaced on my '00 lex lx470. well the mechanic said that hes dont this on my car before and that he noticed that when you replace the rotors and pads on this truck that the wheel bearing need to replaced.

first off i have no clue what a wheel bearing is, can someone elaborate for me? or has any pic of it?
also is this nessarily true? and if so do i need to buy something to take with me to replace it, i plan on usinf all oem toyota/lexus parts. Or is it something any mechanic can replace or do on his own?

thanks

He is semi-correct. The wheel bearings are what allows the wheel to spin on the axle. When you replace the front rotors on the lx470, you must remove the wheel bearings. This is not a DIY job unless you are mechanically inclined and happen to have access to a bearing press. The bearings will have to be repacked when he is finished and this does not require any parts to my knowledge except for the bearing grease which i believe may be special (not just regular tube grease) These are repacked as part of every 30K service and is a good idea for proper maintence. You may want to give you dealer a call and inquire some more to make sure that I am correct.

Agreed -- the mechanic is semi correct.
Unless your bearings are shot, they won't need to be replaced. You will need new seals -- the part that holds the bearings in place.

The 470 bearings are not significantly different (if at all) from the 450 wheel bearings. I'm still on my same original set of wheel bearings on my LX 450. They should be repacked with grease. This is not a difficult job, but a bit on the messy side. I don't recall the type of grease used (it's in the FSM), but I have a bunch of it at home and could easily get you the information, if you like.

As part of my front brake rotor replacement (which I did about a year ago), I repacked the bearings and packed the hub as well. Not terribly difficult, but messy and time consuming. The bearings didn't necessarily need to be repacked, but since you're in there...and you have them out...you might as well stuff new grease in there -- it's just smart to do (or have done).

i just got my rotors rear and fronts and new pads all oem. And plan on getting them installed by a local mechanic.

i emailed some toyota parts centers about pricing on bearings, but they also listed a bunch of other stuff i have no clue as to what they are. I am so confused as to what to buy. Also when i go for installation of the new rotors i dont know if i need to get new bearings or not and i really dont want to have to change them cause they are an additioanl 500 bucks.

i thought i could just replace the rotorspads and brake fluid.

toyota listed ...
Part #'s and prices
front inner bearing....90080-36098......$47.64
front outer bearing....90080-36067......$32.07
rear bearing...........90369-48001......$114.29
You may also need these additional items;
front seals............90311-70011.......$19.86
rear outer seal........90313-62001.......$6.00
rear axle o-ring.......90301-85004.......$3.54
rear axle seal.........90310-58002.......$5.24
Each of the preceeding parts are priced per item.

what is all this jesus?

post this same question on the www.ih8mud.com 100series land cruiser forum and you'll get the answers to the questions you have.

If this were a LX450, I could help you out, but I suspect there are a few differences between the 450 and 470 (yes, I'm being a bit sarcastic...there are quite a few differences...)

Good luck.
