Default Chrome Grill

Hey gang I just did my grill a week or so ago and it turned out great! It really is chrome under that paint. I will get some photos as soon as I can. I went to home depot and got some of the citrus stripper and some fine steel wool. I went back to get the steel wool because that was the best thing I found to get the paint off after applying the stripper and some wait time.

Remove the grill and coat generosly with a citrius stripper (i used aircraft stripper, but it is much harsher and you have to be careful. I hade no problems though). Then use a toothbrush or some have use fine steel wool to remove the black paint. Prepare to spend a few hours to get all the paint off. Rinse and clean all the stripper and paint off and then replace the grill.

Default Painted chrome??

Okay, so I just got a 2000 LX470... are you saying your grille was actually chrome, just painted over with black paint from the factory?? If so, what model/year are you talking about? (before I get too excited and start grinding my own paint off and discover there's nothing under it).

Smile -paint = chrome

Dude, thanks for the tip! And I've been hunting the 'net looking for a nice chrome grille that was similar to the factory style...

Re the aircraft stripper, what exactly about it to you have to be careful about?

Thanks again!

You must wear gloves because it is harsh and dont let it touch any part of your car paint. It will eat it in a second. It will not hurt the chrome but get it all rinsed off when yiou are done.

The citrus stripper can be found at home depot but the aircraft stripper is available at auto zone or maybe even walmart in the automotive section

Just check some of the rock chips on your grill. If it looks shinny its probably chrome under the paint.

Angry 98-2000 Land cruiser not a chrome grill under the paint

I was told on this site that under all the black paint would be a chrome grill if i used paint remover. I tried it last night and now my grill looks like it was on fire. is this true and do I have to due it some more? the paint is pretty thick and im thinking im actually digging into the plastic itself. help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats what LX told me but I think I really messed my grill up and now it looks like ***** !!!!!!!!!! LX can you tell me where did you get that stuff and im I not using a strong enough paint stripper? and exactly how long did it take you and what did you use to scrap the paint off !!!!!!!!!!!!!! please let me knot ASAP cause if not i will have to order the chrome kit on ebay to kinda hide the ***** of a mess that I created. Are you sure you can do this to a 98-2000 Land cruiser????????????????????????????????????(very pissed

When did anyone tell you the LC's were chrome underneath? You should have tried chipping the paint off in an unnoticeable area first. Try doing that now, if you don't see chrome....well......
