![Question](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
My check engine light came on last night just out of the blue, so I pulled over and pulled out my owner's manuel. It seems that light comes on if something electrical is wrong or when some is wrong with the gas line. I'am almost positive it has something to do with whatever measures the gas in the tank. I immediatly went and filled the tank up and my gas hand took about 30 minutes before it registered full. Can anyone tell me what may be the problem and what should I do to get it fixed without someone trying to scam me.

Many auto parts stores will pull the code (from the check engine light) for you.
If you have an Autozone near you, I know that they advertise that they will do it for free.
If you can get the code pulled, and let me know what the code is, I can give you a translation from the factory service manual.
The dealership can do it too, but they typically charge an hour of shop time to pull it.
Alternatively, you can get any ODB II code reader and pull the code yourself.

My wife's Nissan threw an o2 code after it had a hard time starting...Autozone cleared the code and it has not come back on.
If my vehicle throws a code, I will:
1) Find out the code from Autozone (investigate what it takes to fix; cost, time, criticality, etc...)
2) Clear the code
3) Wait for it to come back on
4) If it's the same code, get it fixed, either do-it-yourself or dealer.
just my $.02

I had an O2 sensor trip my CEL on my 450. It would come back from time to time after I'd clear it.
The worst I can think of happening -- with a bad O2 sensor would be slightly worse gas mileage. It might come up as a problem if you live in an area with strict emissions standards (and you had to get tested).
On the 450, the job's not difficult, just a pain to get to the O2 sensors and nuts are usually rusted tight (due to the location).
Check with a local Toyota dealership on the pricing. It might be a few bucks less than Lexus. The job would be the same as the Land Cruiser for the same model year.

Mrpit,
Actually, I would clear the code and see if it comes back. Then check around with the discount online Toyota parts depots for better prices. Never use anything but the proper Toyota O2 sensor. If the code comes back....its very easy to replace the sensors.
BTW, see my other thread about engine knock. Does your 99LX have any engine or piston knock when its first started on colder mornings? I need help fighting with Lexus.
Thanks a ton.
