Whe you say the cracks have been covered in the past, are you talking of warranty coverage?
I've got 85K on my LX...but I have heard of Lexus 'taking care' of things like this. How do I approach the dealer regarding this issue?

Sorry,
The topic of cracked exhaust manifolds have been covered in the past. It happens from time to time...not any trick to getting it covered under warranty. 7/70 powertrain should apply to this.
BTW, does your engine knock when you start it cold?
Hint....

I have a similar noise when starting mine in the morning after sitting out all night. When I drive away it sounds like a diesel but after warming up it goes away completely. Mine is a 2001 LX 470 that I bought this past June with 29,000 miles on it. It now has 35,000 miles. I have not had it back to the dealer yet for them to hear it.

>Skyman,
Thanks for the reply. Can you do a small favor for me?
If you start your LX up in the morning....then wait 5 or 10
seconds....then put the truck in gear and load/power brake to the rpm of around 1000
or 1100 rpm. If a piston/crankshaft/rod assembly has some play it will really
rattle and knock.
So, given you do the above procedure...do you hear a distinctive
knock like a hammer hitting a block of iron. Also, how long does the knock last?
Also, could your noise be a cracked exhaust manifold?
Mine will knock for up to 4 or 5 minutes at times if its cold enough. It
will knock for 2 minutes if the temps are as warm as 50 degrees.
Thanks again for your reply and if you can do this extra with
feedback that would be great.

i noticed that the GX470 was mentioned so i figured i'd chime in. i have an '06 GX470 with @55K miles on it. i live in NJ and it has been quite cold lately(in the teens and twenties). i have yet to hear any knocks like you described nor have i had any electrical problems other than my CD changer not working....but i think the problem with the CD changer was caused by something the previous owner of the vehicle did. the only problem is i can't find a solution for it.

I have a 2000 LX 470 which I bought brand new, and I do leave it outside when I work Night shift, I live in Michigan and it does sometimes get very cold at night. Some mornings when it is in the single digits it does make Knocking noise at start up but it does seem to go away after a few minutes. I have never really thought that much about it because it only seems to happen when its very cold out, however I do have 180,000miles on it.
