SO, what do u LX470 owners (or any Lexus owners) think about Benz bringing the Glandenwagen into the states? I have only seen 3 in person but have never been in one. I read somewhere that their competition is the LX470 and Range Rover 4.6 HSE but not the BMW X5. Why is this? Has anyone ever riden in one? What r they like?

Default hmmm...

I haven't seen a newer pic of the G-series but the ones I've seen were naaaasssty!

I think the reason they wanna compete with range and Lex is because the Range Rover is primaily built to be an off-roader with luxury. The LX470 is based on the Landcruiser and the Landcruiser is the ultimate off-roader, and being that the G-class is for off-roaders primarly it is understandable why they are going after Lex and Range. But what is a bit uncalled for is them shooting after the LX470, after the 2nd generation LX was produced to be more civilian and less off-roader. Most Landcruiser owners laugh at people with the 100 series because they say it was made to go to the mall with. Suprising why they decided on now instead of when the LX450 was out, because that is an off-roader without a doubt.

Personally, I love every model Glandenwagen. Of course i would buy an LX470 ove rone any day but the MB's have great pff road ability (close to the hummer) and are one of the most luxurious too (based on the pics i have seen).

for pics of the new one, go to http://mbusa.com/brand/container.jsp...modelCode=G500

Francis K is right about the MB G-Wagon not competing with the X5 because of the limited off-road ability of that SAV. The G-Wagon is an off-road monger and is among the highest, biggest, most luxurious SUV's that can still off-road if needed. That would be the Range Rover, LX 470, and some others. I also agree with 1SICKLEX that is is outdated in a number of ways, like the Rnage Rover and Discovery, but will probably off-road very well. As for it's price tag, that means those who have the $$$ will have the status symbol. I think it will be more of a statment type car for many than an off-roader.

Sometimes I like it, other times I don't. I would rather have an LX470, or any number of other SUV's, before the G-Wagon like others stated.

Default $120,000???

The G-wagen will cost $72,500 starting this fall when MBUSA starts to import and sell them through their dealer network. They will be compared to LX470 b/c the cost is relatively close. I have not driven a G-wagen, but I'm seriously considering getting one in a few years (I'll get an LX within the next few months). I really like the LX for all of the things it does well, but the G-wagen is much more the type of vehicle I like to have...it's very ugly and intimidating on the outside and the inside is a nice cross between the previous generation S-class and a Range Rover.

I do not understand how people buy these outdated cars and think they are new (i.e. Range Rover been out since 1988, G-wagon has not changed in a decade, old Denali/Escalade based on a 10 yr old platform)sigh.....

It's like a fancy Hummer or something, an acquired taste I guess....
Imight be misunderstanding you 1SICK, but there is nothing wrong w/ buying a car that has not been changed in a decade. I got my 1992 SC300 last yr. and most people think its a 2000. As I see it, if a car has not been changed in a decade, it must be a good car (SC300/400, NSX, etc.) Again, I may not have understood what u meant by "I do not understand how people buy these outdated cars and think they are new"
