Default Transmission Problems

Just had the transmission re built on my 2000 LX470, 75K miles, I'm the original owner, wife drives it almost exclusively, no off road or the like. Anyone know of a history of this??

I have three Lexus vehicles, never a problem...but getting a little wary!!!

What exactly was the problem with the transmission? Our 99LX has 85k with heavy duty mountain driving in Colorado in addition to pulling a trailer...4k lbs. No problems and I will installing the TRD supercharger next week. I have no worries about the trans or driveline.

I have heard of a problem with some 2000-2001transmissions. Something to do with a part out of tolerance. Sorry, I don't have anymore information though. But even then, I've heard of only a few transmission problems on the LX470/LC.

do you suppose trere was a service bulletin on the Part out of Spec?? I sounded like a bearing going bad when the trans was in the normal drive mode. No noise when accallerating or when shifting. Does anyone know a factory rep to contact?? Thanks

I just bought a 2000 with 52,000 on it. Was wondering what it cost to get tranmission fixed?

Thanks,

This is a great site!

Default Cost to fix it.

At least $2K to fix it. Buy an extend warranty, it costs around $2K for a 4 year bumper to bumper from third party, but make sure you campare prices, coverages & terms.

My 2000 with 92K is in the shop now for a transmission replacement. I opted to have it replaced rather than rebuilt as I've heard to many horror stories of rebuilt transmissions. This will set me back about $3500. I had thought about getting an extended warranty when the mfg warranty expired...I wish I would have. I never thought I would need an extended warranty for a Lexus!

For $3500 you are getting a rebuilt transmision. Mine was $3550.00 and it was put in by a Toyota dealer as our Lexus dealer is 70 miles away. The trans is the same as a Land Cruiser. Warranty is 12 months or 12,000 miles. I never thought I would need a transmission either!!!

I have a 2001 with 86K. Drove about 35 miles on the highway and excited to go about 35 mph...started feeling a slip or "jerk" of sorts. Put it in neutral to coast and come to a stop at a red light. Put it back in Drive to go and the engine stalls - check engine light and the A/T Trans light went on. Did this 4-5 times as I tried to get it out of the intersection. Had to have it towed - waiting to hear what the repair shop tells me Monday. Anyone had this problem??

It sounds like you will need a transmission replacement. I had almost the same exact problem about 5 years ago with my LX470. The only difference is that I put in Drive and the RPMs went crazy and in Neutral it was okay along with the check engine and A/T Trans lights on. I ended getting new trans. That was at 92K and now I'm at 172K. Good Luck!!

Virtually all tranny failures for the Landcruiser/LX470 I've heard of are on the 2000 model...apparently a bad batch of shims from some supplier.
