i did this a while ago...I think i used the 4runner scoop too. We almost got a 4runner w/ the scoop but then got the LX. Always wanted a hoodscoop for my intake.

if it's for the intake...shouldn't it be off to the side?

well i like things symetrical. I took my V8 emblem off because i didnt like how there wasnt another emblem on teh other side. If i got a intake done, it would be somewhat like the camaro SS setup. I would get a custom airbox made to bolt to the intake manifold with a short runner tube curving into the throttle body. It would be a big panel filter gasket fit to the hood with proper drainage for water.

No, the hood scoop actually has a purpose. It's the air intake for the intercooler on the 1KZ-TE and 1KD-FTV 3 liter turbo diesel engines used in every non-North American country on this planet in the Hilux Surf/4runner/Landcruiser Prado. Those engines have the intercooler smack in the middle on the top of the engine w/ the cylindrical airbox on the left front. Since we get no TD here, the marketing guys got clever and decided to sell it as a "sport" version, and charge more $$ for it!!

I've seen FRP and carbon hoods in LC mag for the LC 100 w/ negative indentation where the hood scoop would normally go, but nothing for the LX.

.

You are absolutely right. While I was living in Asia, I had Hilux Surf with 1KZ-TE turbo diesel EFI motor and there was a hood scoop for the intercooler. I also had Prado with the same motor but my prado didnt come with the hood scoop.

And I currently have 2006 4Runner Sport Edition and also have the hood scoop and the scoop is blocked and do not have any use for it. Kinda lame if you ask me. And I don't think it looks good either.

Yeah, just disrupts the air flow over the vehicle more. If they offer the scoop, they should offer the TD or a turbo'd V6! Some of the earlier 1KZ-TE's didn't have the I/C on top (I presume you had a 90-series prado?), leading me to believe they were not intercooled (just turbo'd). I think my brother-in-laws '94 ish hilux surf was this way; he told me you get a lot more power if you have the intercooler.

Have to sell... what sells I guess. The sport 4 Runners look pretty sharp, so do the sport tacomas whatever they are called now. But, seems to be just for looks. I would like factory huge holes in my fender. But one thing at a time right. (996 TT)

well stateside the hoodscoops are cosmetic like jim pointed out. Overseas you can fin an intercooler under that scoop. As far as having factory holes in you fenders...996 is old school now. get the 997TT with variable turbine geometry!
