Question 99 Lx470

My 99 LX470 steering column make noise when it moves up and down. Is there a recall or a repair for this problem?

its called the groan, it happens after a while to a lot of them with the power tilt and telescopic. the dealer can probably make it better if not go away entirely

Sorry to tell you, But you may have to see your lexus dealer on that one. The problem is simple to fix. The parts aren't cheape. I had the same problem you had. My service rep told me they see this alot on the LX/LS. Lexus came out with a new kit that fixed the problem back in 00/01 but will not fix it out of warranty. I got lucky and mine was repair under warranty. I ask the service rep if lexus knew about this why didn't they do a recall, And he told me that is not a safety issue, But they have a service bulletin.

And welcome to CL.

Mine 98 doesn't groan but I had the dealer disable the auto retract feature. I just don't need it and prefer it not to break down the road. The steering wheel is still adjustable, it just doesn't auto retract... like the Land Cruisers.

thats an excellent way to extend the life of the tilt and telescopic motors

I also had the dealer disable mine. It still works when you use the memory seats. Only reason to have it retract is if you can't get out of the car w/o it retracting (but then again, you wouldn't be able to telescope it, either). I also don't use the side mirror auto tilt-down (leave the switch in the middle)...saves the mirror motors. Again, still works w/ the memory seats.

but i have brought mine to Longo Lexus to get it fix by changing the motor inside. It did fix that groaning noise but it still comes back... very annoying, but i got used to it....hehehehe...
