MSN Carpoint's review of the GX470 at the NAIAS 2002 show:

They even have a streaming video link for the GX470 intro.

Default More H.P. Please, Mr. Lexus!

Lexus-are you listening? There is still time to correct the lack of ponies in the new GX. Instead of 235, maybe 325? Look at the competition and be a leader in this arena!
Pretty please?

You've got to be a bit reasonable ........Yes, I agree that 235 is a little on the lower side, but about 270-280 bhp and 320 lb ft of torque would be GREAT!!..........I will be buying a GX when it comes out, and even though I would have liked more hp, I'm sure the hp will not be more than 240-245bhp AT THE MOST when it comes out (and I'm perfectly satisfied with this)........that's just the way Lexus does things......look at the ES 300 (at least for the GX 235-240 bhp is acceptable, because it has a really torquey engine (320lb ft!!!) and it's an SUV.......but 210bhp for the REDESIGNED ES 300????? IMHO I think the ES should have had at least 240-250bhp to be even considered acceptable, and I give my THUMBS DOWN to the ENTIRE ES 300 STYLING TEAM - In short they should be fired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cause they've come out with one of the UGLIEST car on the planet!!!!!

Question

I agree on all points! I was pie in the sky dreaming, but comparing say to the GMC Envoy which develops 270hp from a straight six cylinder, I think Lexus could at least match that figure with a v/8.
I too was ready to put down the deposit on a GX but am not thrilled with the side opening rear door "ala Izuzu" style. Personally I like the protection of the hatch while raining and trying to load/unload the cargo area. Also, I must have a rear window opening glass area to remove small items and from what I see it does not look like it has one....does anyone know for sure?
