Hello all,
My warranty on my 2003 LX 470 will expire soon and I have been offered to extend warranty by The Warranty Group. Anyone have any experience with this kind of extended warranty? Is this a good deal? What kinds of things have typically failed on the LX 470 that I need to look out for? Thanks.

I would only recommend a warranty underwritten by lexus or toyota financial services. Common "failures" for the Landcruiser/LX470 are
(1) starter contacts go ~80-100K mi (you can replace them yourself for < $50, but dealer will only replace the entire starter; you need to remove the intake manifold...dealer might charge ~$700 total)
(2) Cracked exhaust manifolds. There are two of them (since it's a V engine). Symptoms are a "ticking" sound upon cold start, sound disappears after engine warms up. Replacement cost is like $1500 for each.
(3) Electronic brake booster/master cylinder: very few failures, but if it does, it's $1500 for the part alone plus labor, so probably ~$2K
(4) AHC damper globes: these eventually wear out over time, but should last at least 120K mi unless you or whomever services your vehicle puts the wrong fluid in the AHC resevoir. If that happens, the internal membranes will fail after a few months (making it difficult to blame on the shop). Replacement cost is ~$2.5K.
(5) AHC sensors: internal corrosion from road salt is mainly a problem in rust-belt areas.
(6) Throttle body: no failure, but carbon gets gummed up on the internal flap. The result is if there's enough build-up, the flap won't open easily and the motor that does that will sense an error, throwing a code indicating the TB. Dealer will only replace w/ a new TB (~$1K?). In reality, $3 of carb cleaner usually remedies the problem. You should clean the flap about every 30K mi. Cleaning the TB is not a normal service item, so you have to DIY.
(1) and (2) are inevitable on all landcruisers and lx's from '98-07, usually around 100K miles. I see those as your big ticket repairs.

Wow...so, potentially, my brother could sink anywhere from $3000-5000 before 100K mile mark?! (My brother has '01...he has the manifold crack already at 65k miles.) If not for the Lexus badge, then someone could mistaken this for a Land Rover!

Get the platinum...$0 deductible. You can buy them online for less than at your local dealer. You might get a better deal at the end of the month just before dealers pay monthly commissions to their salesmen.

I had to replace the fuel pump & O2 sensor(s) on my '99 w/~100k mi...I went ahead and had the Timing Belt done(and maybe some very minor things, like oil change?,can't recall). I do recall the bill ~$2500 at the Toyota dealership...Felt rather abused...

Personally I do not like any warranty or extended warranty. How much does each run now?
I had a drive shaft u joint go bad at 58k miles and Lexus changed the entire drive shaft under warranty. Had to change the brakes at ~90k miles and that is it for me but I think I have cracked exhaust manifolds.
