Check Engine Light which ODB tool to use?
I have a 2001 LX470 with 61K. Recently the CEL orange light has come on. Checked fuel cap and it was tight. No loss of power and I was able to push it to 80MPH on the highway. Read past posts and O2 sensor seems most common problem encountered with CEL indicator.
I still have to do the 60K mile service. Can this trigger the CEL lamp?
I want to purchase the OBD II code reader to get the error code before proceding to the dealer or changing the part myself. Will any OBD II code reader with 16 pin connector work or do I have to get a Lexus attachment. I am thinking of purchasing the following from amazon. Also where in the dashboard does one conect the OBD II reader.
Actron CP9125 PocketScan Diagnostic Code Reader for OBDII (Post-1996) Vehicles
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...X0DER&v=glance
thanks

yes any generic obdII scanner will read all universal powertrain codes starting with P.
look under the dash, below the steering wheel. either by the transmission hump or the other side by the door hinge for the plug.
it coudl be an 02 sensor but anything else as well. you could just go to a autozone or equivalent parts store where you are and they will checkt he code for free. let me know the code and i'll tell you waht to look for.

The port location should be the same as in my RX300.

In CA Autozone does not read Check engine Codes. They rented the OBDII scanner tool to me for free. I got the following from the scanner:
P0135 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 1.
I am ordering both front denso sensors http://www.densoproducts.com/. The Bank 2 front O2 sensor will fail in the near future too. I though I was imagining it but engine performance was not good since the check engine light came on. It makes sense now.
This is crazy O2 sensors dying on LX470 at 61K. They should last 100K. There are many others who have had these sensors die prematurely. Looks like it is the O2 sensors that trigger the check engine light most of the time.
Found following info:
Code P0135 Bank1 Sensor1 Before the cats
If you're doing one upstream o2 sensor, I was told you should just do both. And a little tip, take the wheel off and pop off the splashgaurd to get to it. It makes the job go really easy. Leave your battery unhooked while you do the repair and hold down the brake pedal for like 20 seconds before you hook it up again. Hook everything back up and you'll be good to go.
