Default Mods for off-road on LX-470

I am interested in adding the ARB bull bar and Warn wench to my 2001 470. Also interested in welding rock bars under the fancy, lit step to protect it.

Any experience?

Thanks

Default bro bro bro.....

i mean okay......let me get started here...

Okay cuz, do what you gotta do, I ain't mad at you but let me shoot some insight at you if you don't mind (this is a forum isn't it?)

Alright, the LX470 (100 series landcruiser) was dubbed as for "going to the mall" instead of as the ultimate off-roader, it basically ended the Landcruisers tradition. Have you ever seen a LX470 with the ARB Bull Bars.....oh my god it makes me want to throw up.

Do me a favor, and this is just a suggestion. If you want the best most rugged capable off-roading vehicle you can get for your money but still ride in luxury and comfort, look into a LX450. I've seen LX450's (FJ80) commonly going for aound 15k with 70k miles(check out e-bay). Those cars are the ultimate off-roaders. If you don't like that idea, before you go and tear apart your gorgeous, stylish and elequent LX470, try just taking off the step bars and go off-roading. There was a post a while back where a LX470 with just the step bars takin off did better off-roading than a Grand Cherokee all tricked out with a lift for off-roading.

This is just all my opinion after researching the LX after about 2 years now. Let me know what you think, of course I will help all I can even if I don't agree with your idea. There are a few high traffic Landcruiser boards and absolutely anything applied to a 98-2002 Landcruiser can be applied to your LX470, let me know if your interested.

Traveler,
You might want to ask the guy's HERE It's a forum for the 80 series Land Cruiser but they should be able to help you out. Slee offroad makes sliders for LC's so they probably sell them for your truck. They also sell ARB bars. Here's the site:

Fancis...this may be the 1st time i have disagreed w/ you. U r right in saying that the TLC is for going to the shopping malls, but the LX470 is MUCH better off-road than people think. There was a post not to long ago (it prolly on the 2nd page of this section), where a guy said that the LX470 STOCK was better in some areas than his lifted Grand Cherokee:eek:  . The first thing u should do, is remove those lil fancy steps on ur LX470. When I removed them on the 4Runner, it changed the look completly (made it look lifted) and it added A LOT of clearance on the sides. I like the way u r going w/ ARB for the front. If I had an LX (or similar) I would not go cheap and buy "cosmetic" brushguards such as WAAG, etc. I am prolly gonna get a "cosmetic" brushguard for the 4Runna, but its not nearly as nice as the LX. Also, make sure that u have good off-road tires. I have heard that the BFG's are really good.
This site is the best site dedicated to Toyota SUV's, just post under the TLC section and they should be able to help u. http://www.outdoorwire.com/cgi-bin/u...cgi?category=2

Please post some pics when u r finished. I would love to see an off road modded LX470 *sorry Francis* lol

Default your right derek.....

the LX470 would make a great off-roader, and I know about the LXvsCherokee thread, I made reference to it in my post. But it just seems to me that if you wanted to go off-roading you should have bought the TLC and not the LX470........it was made a Lexus for that reason, to distinguish from the off-roading rugged heritage of the Landcruiser......whatever, I'll help all I can.

If you have the cash, definitle check out Jaos.com, nobody makes better off-road stuff then them

Francis....it still all good b/t us? Anyways, money wise, the TLC IMO would be the better off roader, but w/ the height adjustment thingy in the LX, I think that would make it the best off roader parts wise. If u want a serious Toyota/Lexus off roader, find urself a TLC FJ-60. Those things r incredible. If u need anymore help, etc. feel free to ask traveler.

DerekBTW: Francis, hows ur search for an SC goin? Have u done anything else to the LX?

Default oh it's all good cuz!

yea traveler.......were all here to help.........

Derek........man, you have no idea. The serach for the SC ended, along with the search for the Boxter, Jag, CLK, Escalade and GS. Now I'm dead set on a supra (unless a Ferrari, Lambo, maybe NSX or VIper rolls up at the auction first ). I just want somthing sporty for the summer(put that top or targa down!), with a lot of head turning power, girls will love and is faaaaasssssssttttt.

As for the LX...........don't tell her this but she might be finding a new home soon to make way for another SUV

How's the SC bro....any mods?

Francis....DON'T GET RID OF THE LX man. that is one awsome SUV dude. What r u looking at to replace it (PLEASE don't say an american SUV)? As for ur search for the Supra, IF U GET AN MKIV SUPRA, I WILL COME UP AND VISIT U MAN. the MKIV Supra is my dream car (even over any Ferrari, Lambo, McLaren, Benz, etc.). Dude....were u serious about a Boxster?????? BTW: I have put an intake on the SC, along w/ some engine appearance mods. The next thing I want to do is tint, and then either exhaust or underbody neons.

As for the LX470 issue, LX470 is right about the JAOS LX470...it IS awsome. I would put all the JAOS products on the LX (if i had the money) except for the front guard. The Jaos one is not as tuff/strong as the ARB bull bar and i don't think it can support as big of a winch as the ARB (i might be wrong). As for putting JAOS stuff on ur LX......If u take it offroad (trails, etc. not like mud holes or anything) almost all of ur accessories WILL get slightly scratched if not dented, etc. The only problem w/ the JAOS stuff is that it is very expensive, and it will get scratched just like the "other" products would. If u want style, effectiveness, etc. and r willing to pay a pretty penny for something that WILL get scratched, then go w/ JAOS. If u r not willing to do that, can't afford it, or just don't want to, then go ahead and buy a universal roof basket, etc.

Good responses, thanks guys.

As for you Francis. Yeh, I know it looks funny ("puky") but that is what is sold now. Besides its got a great V-8 and that air-suspension is great off road ... especially in deep snow. (If you get high-ridged, lower the truck and wait 5 minutes. Then raise the truck again. The weight and heat of the truck will compress the snow. Try that in a 450).

Sure the sides look like they need lyposuction, but hey, who doesn't these days?

Anyway, mine learned the hard life as a result of a long story. It originally was for seducing large clients in the sports areans. Oh well.

Since those days, I have spent several nights in side (not long enuff) and bumped and grined all over the Tahoe area. That's the life of a truck and now its my fun truck.

I have learned ARB does make lockers and bull bars for the Warn. Sliders? Still looking. Not a hard custom job if its not already available.

Starting to save bucks for this. And still have to drive from VA to NV to retrieve the guy. Miss it so. Besides its got all my gear.

All this is boring as shXt.

Anyone want to get a bunch of vehicles together and hit the internal roads of Labrador this year. North to Lab City and then cut and run toward the Hudson Bay. Can exit by going South or by hitting Goose Bay (ferry to Newfoundland with a sling loading).

Or take Yukon 3 and explore the northern roads towards the McKenzie (sp) river valley.

CHeck out: http://4by4connection.com/toyota17.html.
Specialists in our kind of wierdness.

There are also some good sources in Oman and around Hong Kong/Australia, but they are harder to deal with.

BTW: is there a trick to uploading pics. I keep going through the steps and at the last screen receive a page saying there is no way to complete the operation.

Hey Francis,

The 450 is a tough truck. It has a ton of stuff to customize and is thousands less to do the basics. Besides, you don't look like some stupid rich dork bashing up your 470.

Don't dump that 450 TOO fast.

The coolest thing about the 470 is the power (low end torque not the horsepower) and the suspension. The interior room in the back is cool, too.

I pulled rock trails outside of Barstow at a BLM site. Basic loose rock and steep trails. Got an emergency call.

Had to get to Reno immediately. Took the short cut from Baker through the desert. Topped out at 106 on the flat with full gear.

Not many vehicles are so versatile.

I would upload pics of playing out in the DEEP snow if I could figure it out. I keep uploading to a page that says NO CAN DO.

Help.

Traveler: make sure ur pics are in either TIFF, JPEG, or GIF format. I'm glad u had a good experience w/ ur LX....it just go to show u that the LX is a true "beast"

Francis: DON'T SELL THE LX450 man. I'm still not quite sure what direction u wanna go w/ it (up or down ) If u wanna go up (which is what i would do), i would take off teh running boards, and go try to find a beginner trail or something similar (just someplace where there are some small dips, etc.) and see what the LX can do and if u like it. I'm sure that u have some friends that would be willing to go with u and help u if u get carried away and get stuck . If u like how the LX felt, etc. doin the lil stuff, get urself some mods (OME lift, brush guards, etc.), take some pics, and then take it off the pavement. If u do sell it (god forbid....lol j/k) PLEASE DO NOT get a caddy, land rover, etc. U will be shooting urself in the foot until u get rid of it. IF u DO sell the LX450, get an LX470 or an older model (89-97) TLC. I would also recommend a Toyota 4Runner SR5 (i know ur sis has a 4Runner but still....) b/c these have many mods for them, are one of teh best SUV's ever to take off road, and look like the SHIZNIT when they r modded.

BTW: I'm still waitin for some pics of ur LX
