Default Shopping for an LX

Hey all,

This weekend I will be doing some shopping for an LX470. I have only found one or two I am interested in (1998, 2000).

I was wondering what to look for when buying the car. Common problems that I should check for? Anything specific to be asking about?

Thanks,
pax

I have the 2000. Very happy with it. Has 106,000k. Just replaced the timing belt, water pump, hoses, belt etc. Everything works great. I think it tends to be hard on brakes because of the weight. Those are expensive if you have to replace the rotor. The timing belt did show signs of fraying so it does not need to be replaced on schedule. I think Lexus recommends replacing it at 90,000k. I had to replace the key housing because it cracked. Luckily someone from this site recommended an aftermarket place that was much cheaper than the dealer. It's really been a durable car. Standing up to 3 little kids. Good luck.

Chassis rust is something you should look out for. The LX470 was designed in the mid 90's for a 98 release so corrosion technology is bit dated, minor surface rust as well tends to be a small problem.

Powertrains on the LX470 are solid but I have heard of people having issues with AVS suspension.

cracked exhaust manifold is pretty common on the lx, maybe something you could look into when you are going to purchase one.
