Default FYI..Tune Up precautions

Just thought I would share what I learned today as I was doing a tune up on my LX 450.

I new it was time to change my plugs and wires. After doing so I immediately new the engine was missing. It never did that before changing plugs and wires. I found the miss was in the 4th cylinder so I swapped plugs around to see if maybe a plug was bad. Nope nothing changed still missing. I then let my mechanic look at it. He checked valve compression. It was OK. I asked him if it could be the distributor and rotor. He said because it was firing good it probably was not the distributor (or something like that). He then took off the distributor and looked carefully at the contacts. He noticed a very small line running from #4 to two other contacts. He then said that was probably current or firing ??? going from contact to contact and that was not good and most likely the problem.

I then bought a distributor and rotor. It purrs like a kitten now.

You guys may have known about that already but that was just something else I had the privelege of learning today and wanted to let you guys know to make sure you replace the distributor and rotor as well.

sounds like you are describing the distributor cap and rotor. The distributor cap can also crack or warp giving the same misfiring symptons you described. The good part is newer vehicles replaced these parts and the sparkplug wires entirely which improved reliability.

Kyre,

Yes they did. My wife's 2000 LX 470 has just a coil attached at each plug. I replaced one of those recently. That dude was $60. Other than O2 sensors that is the only thing I remember having to replace on it and it has 188K miles now. Not suprising though.
