Default Is it worth to fix Nakamichi CD changer (2000 Lx470)

The repair shop estimated 485$ for the fix. The problem was err 3 and CD changer does not accept any CD. The repair person says that it has problem with the CD mechanism and it needs parts which he is going to order.
Since I've seen so many people with the same problem. do you recommend fixing the problem( and I am concerned that this problem appear again) or just replace with after market stereo.
What aftermarket stereo do you recommend which looks good in the console?

Thanks

One more thing. Is there anyway, I can play CD without removing the Nakamichi stereo, by plugging a different unit somewhere else (USB or some other way, sorry I am little familiar with stereo systems). I fear the after market stereo wont look good in the console.

Did you decide what you're going to do yet?
I have the same decision to make. Easiest thing is just swapping out the radio head for a replacement but not sure that's the smartest thing to do. Looking into the aftermarket thing but it doesn't seem that there is a good fit for the opening. I don't need anything fancy but I do want it to look good. Let me know if you find out anything. Thanks.

No, I have decided not to replace the unit for 2 reasons
1) It is harder to get an aftermarket unit that fits in LX470, and even if it does it will require most of the wiring change
2) It wont look good plus I dont like the small buttons on aftermarket stereo
3) Aftermarket will hit the price of the vehicle. The factory fitted stereo is always the best. Lets say 450 to fix the stereo vs 400$ for aftermarket but is it worth saving 50$ at the cost of depreciation caused by the after market unit.
I am looking for someone who can fix it under 400. I am trying to find a way to contact Nakamichi to purchase the CD changing unit in the stereo. They still make it but dont know if they sell it to individuals.

I spoke to sound repair cocoa
http://www.sound-repair.com/ who gave me an estimate of 325$ for CD changer mechanism replacement. They seem to know the problem but I didnt find any review of the shop, and I cant bring the unit to the shop as it is on east coast (need to ship it which bothers me). Can anyone recommend this place for stereo repair? or is there any other good place where I can get this work done.

Why don't you simply pick up a used disc changer? It shouldn't cost very much and it would be a direct swap out that would take you less than one hour to do yourself. Also, for the price that you are thinking of paying for the repair you could pick up several used disc changers. Repairing your disc changer is definitely NOT worth it.

lev00221,
Can you suggest where should I look for use disk changer? Are you referring to the complete stereo or just the CD changing mechanism in the stereo?

I would skip the repair bill and purchase an iPod integration kit. Who still uses their cd changer anyways?
I had a disc changer go bad in my '95 SC400 years ago and was quoted something like $800.00 for a replacement! Needless to say I passed.

Will 2001 Lx470( or 1999 CD changer will fit in 2000 lx470?
The 2001 cd changer is from mark and levinson instead of Nakamichi but looks fairly similar

Better check those connections because I don't think ML & NAK are compatible products.
