I recently bought a GS300 and found this forum looking for information about my new car. It's nice to see so many people enthusiastic about their vehicles.
This is our family's third Lexus. Our first was a Champagne 96 LX 450, which we bought used in the summer of 1997. While it was essentially a re-badged Landcruiser, we bought it because it was priced about the same as the Toyota and had a better warranty.
In the fall of that year, my wife and I almost t-boned a Camry that turned in front of us on a 4-lane highway. My wife was driving and had almost no time to react, so we hit the Camry going about 50 mph. We knocked the Camry at least 100 feet back across its lanes of travel.javascript:smilie('')
My wife was five months pregnant then. Today I look at my healthy three-year old son and thank God that we were in such a solid, heavy vehicle. The air bags fired on impact, and we both walked away without a scratch. Fortunately, the other driver had only minor injuries. Thanks again, Toyota. Our second Lexus? -- an identical 450 (except that it was black) to replace the one that we totaled.
There are SUVs out there with cushier rides, but none that are built like the 450. The thing is an absolute tank. It is not very speedy (the 470s are no doubt improved), but I would not want my family riding around in anything else. I've got the GS now for racing, anyway!

I had basically the same exact expiernece, she fishtailed turning, I t-boned her in her 2001 mustang, I basically knocked her engine out and I needed a few dents knocked out and a new bumber and fender. It pleases me to see someone talking so positive about My Lex. I always feel like I should waited longer on the auction block for a 450 to stroll down and I hear talk of a LX500 and LX430 and I just keep thinking of my car as obsolete, great thread, I'm happy your family was safe, thank god for that, but one thing, my airbags never popped out, it was have been because my car ran over her hood, all for the full time for wheel drive(arr arr) .

Kluger V (Highlander)
Hilux Surf (4Runner)
Hilux Sports Pickup (4Runner lookalike Pickup truck)
Harrier (the cool guy and the RX300)
Land Cruiser Cygnus (LX470)
Land Cruiser Prado (Rugged version US Land Cruiser)
Land Cruiser 70 (JEEP lookalike)
Land Cruiser 100 (US Land Cruiser)

More SUVs than you think man. The Mega Cruiser isn't sold here in US. So there's only 5 for now. Which is already alot.

Notice that third, smaller rearview mirror located on the front end of the hood? Every SUV in Japan has one of those.
Back in June of 1998, I saw a black RX300 in Boston driving down Newbury Street with one of those mirrors affixed.
I have one, myself, only I never got around to having it installed on my RX. It requires you to drill two big quarter sized holes on the front driver's side panel of your car to install. I also have the Harrier badge and some Tom's headlamp covers.

Sequoia is bigger than the LX, both 450 and 470. The third mirror is used for blind spots. It's on the left side of the car because in Japan, that would be the passenger side. Makes a lot of sense to have, but I know a good deal of Harrier owners who chop off the mirror and seal up the holes.
