Just packing up our 2004 LC for 2000 mile trip to CA for the winter months...then return to MN maybe in April. LC turned 200K miles last month and other than taking in for oil change and inspection I have no serious qualms about taking on such a long trip. Will likely move up to a 2018 LC upon our return.

Current LC is my third...1991/1994/2004...total now over 500K miles total. Last two 1994 (210k miles) and the 2004 now at 200K+ miles have had a total of one non-maintenance repair...had a refurbished nav unit (evidently a "known" issue) replaced in the 2004 for just over $1K.

I have driven the 3 LCs since 1991 likely will drive one until they take away my driver's license ...that is unless they come up with a better GX...then maybe? TomMartin

Hello, just wanted to second that the LX is a great vehicle for ANYONE, especially for a teenager (if you can stand the poor mpg and higher operating costs vs something like a tin can as in a small car. But then it's apples to oranges comparison).

Anyway, our previous 2000 LX470 bought since new went to 280+K miles before we traded in for another brand new 2013 LX570. So as long as you do routine maintenance on time, you should be ok. I can not emphasize enough about oil changes every 5k miles or less as we did on the LX's. Some will argue for 10K mile oil change intervals as stated in our owner's manual, but one can do what one wants. To change oil in the LX570 is very simple......no need to jack it up as it is already high enough. Should be a 30 minutes or less procedure. Take the old oil to Walmart/AutoZone/PepBoys/Discount Auto Parts, etc. Free of charge (Actually in CA, you are already charged a fee when you buy the oil anyway).

Can't tell by "CA" if you're in Canada or California, but if you're in California the state insurance board shows the number of consumer complaints for each company.

The LX is derived and made on the same assembly line as Land Cruisers. Toyota designs the Cruiser for a 25 year / 250K mileage life. It is NOT true as posted above that "the new machine is much better and less likely to break". There are plenty of '08's driving around with high mileage and zero issues. My wife drives a 2001 LX470 that's had zero unscheduled maintenance items in +190K miles.

Having raised 3 boys, I'd be looking for more of a beater for the kid, v. a 3 ton truck that will get to 60mph in less than 8 seconds. Good luck with whatever you do, and be sitting down when you get the insurance quote.
