Thumbs down Airbag Light Recall

I finally got fed up and called Lexus as the warning light is now nearly always on, and we are getting fed up with not using the front seat (advised by dealer as the only solution available now). The recall was issued in DEC 2018.

Lexus acknowledged that to date there is NO FIX for this issue. I am puzzled as in a different thread people are saying the dealer fixed theirs. My dealer confirmed that there is a replacement part with a different part humber that needs to go on, and that they would not replace the part with one earring the old part number. Lexus offered a rental car, and said, the fix may take "until mid summer". The new part has yet to be manufactured.

My wife, the primary driver of the car, needs all 7 seven seats 2x per week, and we usually take it long trips and to the mountains. This seat switching recommendation is not workable for us. And, I really don't want a rental car -certainly not for months.

How have the rest of you dealt with this?

p.s. we took it in for this reason couple of years back, and when they installed everything, they haphazardly put back the seat panels. The real panel fell apart and the mounting clips were all broken. I ignored it for a long while. Took it back and asked them to put in new plastic clips. They wanted $600 for a new rear panel. I ended up taking to an upholstery shop who put it back with a screws for $125. If they are as careless as they were with mine, you may end with a detached rear panel a while after the fix.

Right now, a dog uses the front passenger seat, buckled in using a chest collar...humans use the 2nd row, 3 row was removed when I bought the truck...or we take wife's LX or truck.

I called 2 local dealers last week, as our Land Cruiser had the problem occur last Wednesday and I did receive the first recall letter 5-6 weeks ago.

Both dealers advised that they will see my VIN is ready to fix around the same time I see the second recall letter from Toyota...i.e., both stated they get no advance notice as to VIN's ready to get the "fix", whenever the hell that may be. The "mid-Summer" eta you received is a pure guess, imo. We were damn sure we'd have a fix by end of January, mid and then late February, and then the end of March for sure. Toyota also has the recall for all 200 series, both LX and Land Cruiser, starting in the '08 MY.

I'm sitting back and waiting, thankful we've got to extra vehicles.

Thank you for that.

I suspect it is a game of numbers, and they are taking their chances given how few of these vehicles are on the road. If this were a Camry problem, they would have the fix as they would announce the recall. It is really careless risk management however. If something happens to someone, there will be no end to the liability they may face.

Thanks for the thanks...

I'm not sure they could react that fast if the Camry issue covered the same MY's as the current 200 series recall.

I've got no idea as to Camry production, but as an example, Toyota exports ~ 80K 4Runners to the North American market, they export ~ 7000 200 series in a recent year. Go back 5-6 years and you're looking at ~ half a million recalls.

My MY15 threw a SRS / Air Bag light probably 3-4 times over the past few days....light would go away upon restarting the vehicle. Something isn't right but hate when issues only occur sometimes / intermittent. Bringing the vehicle to a dealership tomorrow and see what they find (probably will be stored as history code instead of current).

What kind of warranty does SRS / Air bag components have? I have ext Lexus Platinum Warranty and wonder if that'll cover air bag failures...

Have you seen a recall letter from Toyota yet?

If your truck is one in the recall campaign, and I assume it is, fixing the recall issue has zero to do with a warranty, platinum or otherwise. If it's an issue not related to the recall, why not call your local service manager and ask???

Yes I did receive the airbag recall notice. But I think that recall is for the front airbag on the passenger side dash. I dropped off my vehicle at the dealership (I m there now) and the shop foreman diagnosed (based on the history code - not current) it's the occupant sensor in the passenger front seat. They need to hold my car longer for further diagnosis at this time and will open a case with Lexus. Hopefully they'll be able to replicate the symptom and fix it one shot.

Recall notice...

"On December 13, 2018, Toyota filed a Defect Information Report (DIR) with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) informing the agency of our intent to conduct a voluntary Safety Recall on certain 2008 – 2019 model year Land Cruiser vehicles.

"Condition

"The front passenger occupant classification system has a seatbelt tension sensor that could malfunction over time and could cause the airbag warning light and the passenger airbag “OFF” indicator to illuminate. In addition, the front passenger airbag, passenger knee airbag, and the passenger seat-mounted side airbag may be deactivated. If these airbags are deactivated, there is an increased risk of injury to the occupant in the event of a crash."

The 200 series recall has zero to do with airbags.

I have not.

You'll not see progress in the form of a second letter until the dealer can actually order repair parts for your VIN. What puzzles me is that the parts have not been available, at least for my VIN, for half a year. Same parts are used in the LX and Land Cruiser

I did call Toyota corporate last Monday about the recall. Lady who took the call transferred to a specialist in the recall area. He said no updates yet for my VIN. I was offered the use of a loaner vehicle until mine is repaired. I passed as the recalled vehicle needs to be parked at the dealer's lot, until the recall is remedied. I'm ~ 40 miles from 2 dealers in the area...not about to leave my truck down there for an undetermined time.

You are probably correct, the air bag light recall for me /570 was done in feb.
Dealer called me to bring my car in, I bought the car from then I think dec or nov last year.

the gx is a separate recall

uz214, which dealer was able to fix the LX570 recall? If you can PM me the info that would be appreciated. It’s been over 2 weeks since I had dropped in my wife’s LX and dealer is not getting any updates from corporate. If I relay the dealer you took it into, maybe they can recommend a fix.

Thanks.
Mike

As of last week, Northside Lexus in Houston says they don't have a fix and they are not offering loaners in the interim.
