Default 2016 power tail gate question and thoughts

For 2016 LX, the power tail gate can only be opened either by switch on dash or key fob, but can not operated by the unlock button above the license plate on the gate. This has been change with 2018 model year if I am correct.

My question is: can this be easy retrofitted? Since all the opening components are there, what has been changed, just the locking/unlocking rubber switch? Or that involves replacing ECU, or there is just missing wires?

Never can understand the Lexus logic when the have designed the way for 2016 (maybe 2017 too) for that. It will be nice to make it as same as 2018+

Not yet, that would be my next step. I did check owner manual, did noticed there is one Techstream option to allow auto open tail gate by pressing the outside button on the gate for 2018, that option was not listed for 2016. I will take a look techstream to see if that might be there for 2016 as well.

my buddy has the same concern with his 16' LX as well. I'm going to help him by looking at Techstream this weekend. Will let you know what I find out.

Thanks. It would be great if that function is actually there already.

I am running Techstream v14.30.023 on my '17 LX and looked through the customization menu today to see if I could turn this function on. I could not but I am not an expert when it comes to Techstream and there is a newer version available. I would be very interested in what you discover and please let us know what Techstream version you are running regardless of outcome.

hzhao, unfortunately no luck yet. We spent roughly 2 hours looking through Techstream options. We will try again this weekend. If it doesn't work, our next option is to try flash ECU through techstream or just simply replace ECU with 18+ LX version. I don't know which ECU holds the setting for the liftgate operation. Any thought?

I'd call Toyota/Lexus corporate and ask the question. If the person taking the call doesn't know, you can request a tech person/engineer to call you back. I'd also ask for the standard cost of re-flashing the ECU.

Imo, if a new ECU is needed, I'd save my money for something else. ;}

Thanks for the efforts. It should be part of the main body control function, and embedded in Main ECU. If that needs to be replaced, not sure what other may be impacted since Main ECU also communicates with other ECUs as well.

I finally come up with the solution and implemented. It works well. The details is on an separate thread that I just posted:
