Default Looking for unbiased opinion

All,

let me start off by saying I’m a Lexus guy, I’ve owned 3 GS’s and I’m now in the market for a large SUV. I have been in love with the LX since I was a kid and I’m finally fortunate enough to purchase one. With that said, I am having a tough time making a decision and welcome any and all input on the matter. I have done my research and narrowed it down to two vehicles, LX sport or X7M. So, being a Lexus guy I am biased, but on paper the more expensive BMW beats the LX across the board. Cargo space, engine performance, gas mileage, technology all go to the bmw. I’ve test driven both and it’s a toss up. The only real downside I see is that it’s a bmw and do I really want to be a bmw guy going forward? Also, I have been toying around the idea of waiting a year to see what the 2022 LX will be as hopefully it gets a tech refresh. I have read rumors of a turbo charged v6 instead of a v8 which going from a v8 ‘06 gs350 to a v6 ‘13gs350 didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. Anyway, welcome to all opinions and any Pro’s/cons I haven’t thought of between the two.

I have owned both BMW and Lexus, as well as many other brands in same class. If you planning to keep the vehicles for long time, Lexus beats all of them. Toyota/Lexus liability will give you the trouble free ownerships for years to come. Other fact for you to consider would be if you see yourself with any off road ventures in the future, LX is a true body on frame SUV vs BMW is a crossover. German automotive industries often stay in front of technology, but Japanese’s are more conservative but perfectness for what they use.

It’s hard to compare apples and oranges. It’s really come down to what and how you use the vehicles for and personal preferences. Regardless what is your final pick, I am sure that you will be happy with it.

Agreed. One of the many things I like about Lexus is that they are rock solid and other than the regular mx checkups I haven’t had a problem with any of them. Crossing into a new brand is definitely the unknown. I don’t have any real off roading in my future but truly love the big body LX look. While the massaging seats and full fold down 3rd row in the X7 are also really nice and imagine I would take advantage of those features on longer road trips. Really wish I knew what was in store for the 2022 LX

If you are leasing, and will only keep for the lease, you will have way more enjoyment with the BMW any day of the week. If you are going long haul, the LX will be the winner hands down on maintenance and out of repair warranty costs in comparison to the BMW.

As for your prior history, "going from a v8 ‘06 gs350 to a v6 ‘13gs350 didn’t bother me as much." If this is true (I am skeptical at this point), you would've went from a GS430 to a GS350. Most people who've owned the cars, remember what models they've had. And if you had a GS430, you would not have mistaken it for a GS350. Just say'n.

I'd agree with possibly going with a BMW, but I'd only consider leasing one...I'd definitely dump it before the lease ended.

BMW's definitely do not have the reliability that the LX has...that's why I'm driving a series 200 v. anything from Germany.

I was in the same boat as you are now 2 years ago. I wanted the LX, but went with Audi Q8. I won’t keep it past the warranty, but I still have it and like it, but I still really want the LX. I just might go for one later this year. I was anxious to see the new LX, only if they would just introduce it already. My vote is for LX for reliability!!! I have never owned a German car past the warranty!

Like you i've owned 3 GS; most recently bought a 2020 before it was killed. I've also owned a BMW X5 and presently have a LX570 in the garage. In my opinion it boils down to how long you're going to keep the vehicle. If you are leasing or short term buy the BMW. If you are intending to keep for a long time go with the LX. The LX drives much bigger than the X7 and not even close when it comes to sportiness. We use our LX to tow occasionally and intend to keep for 10 years. If it wasn't for those two factors i'd own a X7 right now.

I would only lease the X7, it doesnt hold value as LX, you might be taking 10k hit a year or more, maintenace and extended warranty are high too. Some ppl might say if you can afford a X7 you shouldn't worried about it.......

In a similar boat now.

I love the LC, but that will be discontinued here in US when the last 2021 models trickle in.
Went to see the LX with my wife, both of us liked it immediately, fit and finish was top notch.
We have had VW, Audi, Toyota and Lexus earlier, still have MB.

Now debating at home what route to go as we are not in a rush;
- Wait to see what Lexus will do with the LC300 for next gen LX? Apple car play/Google Auto etc, touch screen and so on. What power train will they come with, I've read that V8 will continue and additionally the will bring in a hybrid
- Get the current LX around the time of next gen, trying to make a better deal on the "old" version.

Anyway planning to keep it for long term.

I think it's worth waiting a few months to see what the latest and greatest will be. I bought my LX used. It was certified, 2 years old, 10,000 miles. Saved $30k off sticker and get 2 more years of warranty past factory.

I was able to buy my 200 series with no monthly payments simply because I didn't buy a German car.

Pulled the trigger. Talked to a buddy of mine who owns an X5 and he had nothing but good things to say about it. Only downside he had was that it depreciates pretty quick. He also, like everyone on this forum said if I was in it for the short term go BMW but if planning to keep for a while go Lexus. So, little things like fully fold down 2nd row and massaging seats I hope are in the next gen LX. Thanks for the input everybody

Saying goodbye to my Tundra
