When I use the keys or the button on the drivers side to open the tailgate, it opens and as soon as it is fully opened, it goes back down slowly, while shaking from side to side.
It started happening right after my wife used the key fob to open it. It went up about 2/3rds then there was a loud bang sound, it stopped and went back down. There were no obstructions inside or outside. Total mystery.
If I open it manually with the power turned off it won’t stay open, either.
Any ideas? I can’t find anyone who has had this issue.

I’m thinking maybe one of the hatch lift supports? Could be a pretty inexpensive fix as OEM replacements are under $50, less if generic.

They need to be replaced on both sides at the one at a time. If the rear hatch supports are dying, I'd also replace the hood supports. It's a definite diy...about 10 minutes per end.
Hood struts are $107,40 from the same link...I can do a lot better from Strut Doctor imo.
8 inch pointed vise grips with plastic tubing or tape over the jaws will support the tailgate when you disconnect one side. I've also used oak woodworking clamps. If you use non-Toyota supports, try and re-use oem tailgate mounts if possible.
