Default LX600 or GX550?

I’ve had my heart set on an LX600, but wondering if the GX550 might be worth waiting for. All the YouTube videos I see pretty much seem to validate waiting for the GX. If there wasn’t such a huge price discrepancy, I’d jump on the LX since it’s available now. That, accompanied by the sleeker looking interior and console really have me considering a GX Luxury+. Am I missing something about the LX with its higher price tag? Am I really getting 25-30k in value from the LX?

Wait.
The LX600 isn’t going anywhere or a lot is going to be done on it.
To me, the GX has always been the bargain.
massaging front seats on the GX!!! Lexus Safety Connect 3.0!!

It's a different vehicle imo. Just like one debating b/w a MB E-class vs S-Class. Feature wise the GX may have more gadgets, but to me, if I need the size, the comfort (the GX still very comfortable) in the LX, features comes 3rd. If you like the GX size over the LX, and you also like to have the latest and greatest gadgets Lexus has to offer, then go with the GX. To me, I won't even consider / look at the GX because I prefer the LX size but that's just me.

They are both excellent, but the LX is built to a higher standard with a longer service life engineered into it. GX however is no slouch. I don’t think you lose either way.

I owned GX470, GX460 and now LX570. The previous GX was a definite step-down from the LX overall engineering, quality, features, size etc.

The new GX550 in my opinion is much closer to the LX600 than GX460 was to LX570 based on the following points:
1. GX550 is significantly larger in size compared with GX460 and within a few inches from LX600 in length while being as wide and as tall as the LX.
2. The engine is identical 3.4L TTV6 (yes GX has less horsepower but still it is no longer a totally different engine).
3. GX550 has newer tech/safety compared to LX600 and has a few extra gadgets (such as front massaging seats for example).
4. Both GX550 and LX600 are now 7-seaters (LX570 used to be an 8-seater).
5. GX550 has a specific off-road trim with E-KDSS. LX600 does not.

However the following points are in LX favor:
1. LX600 still can be spec'd with hydraulic height control while GX completely lost its rear air suspension.
2. LX600 has both driver and passenger side mirrors with auto-dimming feature. Lexus stripped this feature from GX passenger side mirror back in 2021 and I think the trend continues with GX550.
3. LX600 has an F-Sport version. GX550 doesn't have one, at least for now.
4. LX600 is still built at a different plant and is still "over-engineered" in just about every aspect as its predecessors LX470/LX570 were.
5. LX600 is the only true brother of the LC300 available in USA.
6. It is still technically the flagship Lexus SUV with certain level of prestige and exclusivity attached to it. Buying LX means you have reached the top of Lexus engineering and craftsmanship.

I'm sure there are other nuances that I might have missed here.
Whatever is more important to you, that's where you go.
In the end I don't think you will be wrong with either one of these wonderful machines.

LX have 2 sun visors and all door handles can lock and unlock. The rear seat can recline much more even without the luxury trim.
Before GX550, LX600 is the one that had the newer infotainment, but who is paying upcharge to just get that.

I think I'm over the GX550, it will be known as the Landrover looking one years later, I will probably wait for the 2032 GX second face lift if they still allow ICE car to be sold.

I'm having this very debate right now. There's a LX600 F Sport near me in the exact exterior/interior color that I want. But I had planned on waiting for the GX. The dealer told me that the pre-orders for the GX will take forever to fill, and that there will likely be 10k dealer markups, bringing the price of a GX550 Overtrail+ very close to the LX pricing. Does that seem true to you all?

Also, what does the Lexus Safety Sense 3.0 bring with the GX that the 2023 LX doesn't have?

Thanks

I wouldn’t believe that. He knows the LX600 will be a hard sell when the GX550 hits the lot. Heck, it’s a hard sell now. All my dealerships now have more than 5 LX600 on the lot. These used to have a 5-10k mark up now sitting on the lot for more than a month.

Lightbulb Imo. . . .

I’ve owned 2 Ranger rovers a GX470 & 3 GX460’s from 2011-2020 never owned a LX & as much as I loved my outgoing GX, it’s reliability, driving feel, handling in the snow, but not the Tech…. yes the new GX has excellent tech, but I’ve truly decided that I want to experience Air Force one on four Wheels Which is why I’m picking up my 24 LX F-sport in two weeks once it’s delivered to the dealership…. I have def loved the GX but I have decided it’s just time to step up to the next level of Lexus flagship SUV!!!

that’s the most ignorant statement I’ve ever read on this forum….the Tahara plant is considered the finest automobile plant in the world. The GX platform has gone primarily unchanged for over 13 years. My dealer allowed me to take an LX home overnight. Absolutely loved the vehicle except for the turning radius when in a tight spot. My dealer offers no markups, but I just couldn’t see the difference to justify the price. The new GX and LX share the same motor and subframe. Saying one is built to a higher standard is ridiculous.

Old thread, but my wife and I were deciding to purchase an LX600 last year when we heard the new GX was coming out. We waited until this spring when our local dealer started getting them in, and took a test drive.

Overall it was a nice truck, and completely more modern/updated systems than the LX600 has. We especially liked the "single pane of glass" center screen as opposed to the LX dual screens. GX interior was quite nice, as well. Neither of has hated the GX external styling, but didn't love it either.

However, we slid into an LX for another test drive right after we drove the GX, and we both agreed that the LX was a big cut above in terms of .... well, everything. Liked having more interior room, and the materials and luxury of the LX was just nicer. So we decided to continue to pursue the LX from that point. A month later (May 24) we took delivery of our LX.

The price of the GX (even loaded) was as folks know a fair bit nicer on the wallet than the LX. We are very happy with our LX and think that for us, we made the right decision. This is replacing a 2004 4Runner with 220K miles on the odometer, which has been a stellar truck (I also own a 1995 G-wagen, gray market).

Had my 600 in for service (loose panel vibration when music/bass is up over 45 and a drivetrain, tire, or programming issue causing a shimmer). I looked at a 550 in the showroom, was $80k didn’t look at the sticker too much because I didn’t want a salesman to get his hopes up. Was black on black (like my 600) with a black appearance grill and looked to be a higher end one. When I made the corner and saw the grill I thought it was a 600 for a brief moment.

This is why I didn’t buy a new Tundra. Nothing against either one. But as expected, the first panel I pushed on was rather flimsy. I didn’t look anymore than besides this short video (don’t want to waste a salesman’s time).

I am sure the drivetrain is just fine and may lack some corrosive protections the 600 has.

I looked at a Capstone Tundra someone had at work, pushed on the passenger side panel around the speaker, quickly grabbed some panels in the interior and think it was worse. Told my buddy “nice truck” so he didn’t think I was judging him. I think the GX550 is a little more quality in my 30 seconds of evaluation.

I am fine paying the extra $30k and happy to have that option. One major Caveat to that is, I would alternatively be fine with a Tundra SR or stripped down GX550 at the proper price.

If you are looking and want my input from some cars I have owned known for quality that stick out in my mind (and I have owned many more):
Precovid Mercedes S63 Coupe Carbon Fiber package > LX600 > 2008 Tundra SR5 > 17-19 Superduty Platinum and King Ranch diesels

Notable mention would be the RR Wraith which would land between the S63 1st and LX600 (maybe equivalent) quality wise but not really comparable.

The doors on my 08 Tundra closed more “solid” compared to my 2017-19 Super Duties but in 2009 or 2010 they cheapened up the Tundra and it’s basically slowly became like Ram quality. My 11-16 and 2020 Superduties were well below my 17-19s.

There is my 10 minute throne strictly opinion based review for the day. If you have been in those vehicles this may help you make a choice.

GX550 is pretty and would save some money.
