Check Engine Light
Hey Guys,
Hows it goin? I have a 92 SC300 and the orange check engine light keeps comming on. If I disconnect the battery the light will turn off for a couple of days, then turn back on again. Is there any way to check the engine codes without going to the dealer?
Thanks,
Jake.

I thought with 95 and older one could put the key in the ignition and then press the brake pedal down in about 3/4 of a second (really quick) and then the dash would flash out the code like morse code, i.e., OBDI.
Only with OBDII, 96 and later can you take it to Autozone, but would not be surprised if somebody at Autozone could figure OBDI out.

Hey Jake,
There are many posts on how to retrieve the engine code and what the code means. Do a search and you'll get dozens of hits. Listed below is a good description posted from member khark back in March on how to retrieve the codes.
Basically use a paper clip or wire to jump two connectors on the diagnosis terminal. One of the terminal should be below your left knee, to the lower left of the steering wheel behind/underneath the knee-pad dash area.
The other terminal (at least on my SC400) is in the engine bay right above the oil fill cap, little plastic rectangle box about 1"x2". Says Diagnosis right on the cover. You need to jump the E1 and TE1 terminals.
If you can't find the terminals PM me your email and I can email you a .pdf file from the Lexus service shop manual on "How to Proceed with Troubleshooting". The file has clear detailed pictures.

5) To retrieve codes, turn ignition on. DO NOT start engine.
Using a jumper wire, connect terminals E1 and TE1 together either on
DLC1 or DLC2. See Fig. 2. Count number of flashes from Malfunction
Indicator Light (MIL).
6) If MIL flashes 2 times every second, system is functioning
properly (no codes present). This is known as a normal condition. If a
diagnostic code is displayed, first group of flashes will indicate
first digit of a 2-digit diagnostic code. After a 1.5 second delay,
second group of flashes will indicate second digit of diagnostic code.
7) If more than one code is stored, a 2.5 second delay will
occur between diagnostic codes. After all diagnostic codes have been
displayed, a 4.5 second delay will occur and then codes will be
repeated until jumper wire connecting terminals E1 and TE1 is
disconnected. Diagnostic codes will display from smallest to largest
number.
8) Identify and record diagnostic trouble codes. After
trouble codes are retrieved, remove jumper wire to exit Normal Mode.
