Default Latest on Oil and Additives

Like many, I have watched many a Youtube video on oil. One person has really caught my attention. Lake Speed Jr, a Certified Lubrication Specialist with over 20 years experience. He has been heavily involved in formulating additive packages designed for today's engines. His videos are quite interesting and based on the modern science of ICE cars.
Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/@themotoroilgeek/videos
The basics are "Do Not" use any additives in your oil. Oil is carefully blended with additive packages, and any change will most likely make it harmful to your engine. Buy the right oil for your car, and only use the viscosity's specified by the manufacturer. You might be surprised considering his results from some of the most popular additives.
Another is to use top tier fuel, and a fuel system cleaner containing on a regular basis. One of the biggest problems with modern engines is gas and combustion products contaminating oil, port injection to a degree, but especially with GDI engines. Engines suffer cylinder wash when cold, allowing fuel and combustion particles to get past the rings. Also as injectors age the spray pattern deteriorates, the fuel can burn less efficiently. In his oil analysis he has seen tremendous improvements after just one use of a quality fuel system cleaner, Techron for instance should be added shortly before the next oil change.
One of the other issues is oil filters. Lake has tested many, and his highest rating goes to WIX. From another top engine builder in another forum recommends Napa Gold filters, which are manufactured by Wix. Don't use the NAPA select or platinum.
The thing that gets my most interest is Valvoline's new Restore and Protect oil. I've seen al lot of videos on engine flushes. The biggest problem with that an effective cleaner can actually do more harm than good. There are many small passages with today's variable cam systems, and removing deposits too quickly can lead to particles blocking passages and plugging oil filters. Valvoline previously put out a product for diesel engines that was extremely effective, but for today's gasoline engines developed this new product. It will gradually remove internal engine contaminates, as well as clean those troublesome low tension rings in all newer cars. That said, if you use this oil in an old high mileage engine with heavy internal deposits, I would be a bit cautious and consider checking the oil filter doesn't get plugged.
