On several cold mornings here (Yes, it gets down to 35 F here in Mexico City), it took me 12 minutes for the temperature level to hit the normal driving level.

Lex, geez, I feel for you man! All the way down to 35 . ..... that's when my warm up stand is about 1 minute then slow speed. Heater on auto kicks on in about 3 minutes, engine temp probably about like yours I don't check it.
Trade you for Jersey anytime!

Default Warmup

I always put the transmission in drive about 5 sec. after startup to warm the engine. I find that when in gear the engine warms up much faster. I wait the 5 sec. because the initial high RPM's have dropped off a bit.

Wish list. If we could only do something about not shifting out of third gear untill the temp. gets way up. (Sometimes 2nd gear - depending on what transmission you have.) Irks me to no end.

Default Not too cold in So Cal

The coldest it's been here is probably mid-30's. To make my drive more comfortable I allow the vehicle to warm up a bit. After starting the engine, turn the temperature dial to the cold position. By doing this, you are closing the heater valve. Turn the A/C switch off. Allow the engine to warm up. Once it is warm, you may turn the heat on. Theoretically, the engine should warm up faster like this. just my .02

I leave the AC off when warming up the car. There is 25% less oxygen here in Mexico City at 7,700 feet, that the cold is the least of the worries for my beloved 99 RX. I see people in my building garage turning on their car and leaving (not even letting it warmup). Meanwhile, I see my U.S. friends in the same garage patiently wait for the car to warm up.

I have a friend who works at the Toyota Santa Fe dealer here in Mexico City, and he says he gets complaints from new Toyota owners all the time about how sluggish the cars feel when they get out in the morning (like when it is cold like now). When he tells them about warming up the car, they get all angry like it is just wasting them time and wonder why Toyota did not build it not do this. A couple of times I came to his rescue and informed these people, HEY I GOT A LEXUS AND I WARM IT UP.

Talking Huge difference between cold/warm tranny

Lexmexico, I feel for your friend at Toyota Santa Fe. It's a shame that so many people don't take the time to warm up their vehicle. What's even worse are the ones that complain about the performance of the car when cold.

Default get a remote start

I always get remote start put on my cars as soon as possible to avoid this warm-up time delay. You can push the remote from inside your house, work, movie theater, resturant, or wherever. I always leave the seat heater on in the winter so I do not have to sit on a cold seat. Remote start is not an expensive item to add on. I paid $150. (not at the dealer!)

DON'T warm your car up on cold mornings by letting it idle for an extended period. Start your car, wait a few moments for oil pressure to rise, then drive slowly with minimal throttle for the first few miles. This lets the engine warm up faster and allows fewer contaminants (water, gas, etc) that are abundant in a cold "rich" mixture from entering the crankcase. An engine block heater is highly recommended for cold regions and ungaraged vehicles.
