car needs some TLC
Hey,
I havn't been thinking about this til recently. When I for got my license, my parents gave me the '99 LX470. The car had about ~30,000 miles on it. I wasn't really a big car person at the time so I didn't really know what was proper maintainence. At 35k and 40k the oil was changed at a local shop. They didn't use Toyota filters and I don't think works with many Lexuses and did the bare basics. At 45k I took it to a Lexus dealer to have the 45k maintenance thingy so I beleive everything was done properly.
I want this car to last forever since I've grown attached to it, so many memories . I was wondering what I should have done at my next appointment with the dealer's service dept to make sure everything is in tip top shape. I have no idea when or if the brake system was ever flushed, tranny fluid changed, diff fluid change, timing belt check, steering fluid, etc. My parents did take it to the dealer afew times but never kept any records
Thanks,
Robert

Your dealer can run your service records for you with the VIN. Service done at any Lexus dealer is recorded under your VIN.
Your Owner's Manual will provide you with a list of services that are performed at 5000 mile intervals, both normal duty and rough duty. Be sure you look up what defines "rough duty" in the manual. Most owners do not need this schedule but most dealers will automatically perform services on this schedule unless specifically instructed otherwise. And there is a HUGE cost difference ($280 vs $1300 at my dealer for the 60k mile service for our 99 RX) providing this overkill level of service. At least, it's overkill if your driving doesn't fit into the "rough duty" category.
No manual?? The dealer can get you those, too. Likely you could find 'em on eBay, also.
This should get you pretty much covered, Robert! You've got nice p's, too; that's a hell of a first car!

FYI, you can get FREE owner's manual direct from the Lexus. Go to www.lexus.com and follow the link to the owner's section, register your car, then there's an ordering page to get a free shipped owner's manual to you. And yes, start off w/ the dealer to see what's been done to the car maintenance-wise, then only selectively do the services that are needed to get it up to date.
