Just got my 01Ultra on Tuesday, and now it is time for a refuel... On the fuel door it says premium only... Will it make a difference... Will it hurt my engine... Because here it is $1.64 for premium, and $1.44 for regular... What do u recommend... Any feedback will be greatly appreciated...

I would use Premium. You bought a Lexus I would think because you didn't want to settle for anything less. You know the saying.....you are what you eat..... same goes for the car.

By the way, that's a good price for Premium IMO.

Last year I did a test over a 2,500 trip with minimal elevation changes using regular, mid and premium. With the way the car is pooter controlled, it equates roughly to the premium price. Various MPG: Premium was 26-28, mid was ~23 and regular was 20-21. Give take a mile or two. Cruise set at 65 or 75 depending on posted limits.

Bottom line, just run premium. There are tons of fuel discussions outside of the forum too.

If you are really cheap like me, but want to follow the manufacturer, you could mix half and half. If you tweak the mix toward the premium (93), you'll end up with 91 octane and save 10 cents/gal. The tank holds 22 gallons. Each 1/4 tank is 5.5 gallons. I find the gauge to be extremely accurate. So you can estimate pretty closely from how far down your fuel gauge is as to how many gallons you'll need to fill up. Make about half 87 octane, then shut down the pump and reinsert your credit card and make the other half 93. Actually, I fill the 93 first, estimating it high so any error favors a slightly higher octane mix.

Yup! Actually, I prefer to think of myself as a "value" shopper. And as luxury cars go, the LS is actually a good value play. It has the best resale value and the best defect (lack thereof) record. It's still an expensive flagship car, but the best value in that group.

I usually mix with mid and high grade at half-tank intervals. I read somewhere (but don't believe it) that if you have 51% of high grade in your tank it will convert the rest of the mid grade into the high grade. It was some kind of chemical formulation. It doesn't work like hot water and cold water = warm water.

It is suppose to be more like the 51% takes complete control. But working for on a program for a gas company a few years back I found out that they actually mix grades. Like the mid grade is a mixture of the low grade and high grade. So I don't believe the 51% theory.

But it all comes out of the same tank so high grade won't have any less contanimants. (spell check please).

So, after that all that mumbo jumbo I leave you with this.

"Buy your gas early in the morning, gas is sold by weight and gas is not as heavy in cold tempertures."

This could save you several cents for a full tank...

Yeah, but if you do it your way, you get a constantly changing mixture. Say the first tank is 93 octane. The you go to half a tank and fill with 87. Great, so now you're at 90 octane. Now you go to half and add 93. Now you're at 91.5 octane. Nextime you add 87 and you're at 89.25 octane. Next time you're at 91.13 octane. Next you end up with 89 octane. You end up fluctuating between 89 and 91...which at 89 defeats what you are trying to accomplish.

I propose that my method is better, albeit it takes a little more effort. I can fill up at any point...down 1/4, down 1/2, down 3/4 or almost empty. I know that the gas gauge is extremely accurate and each 1/4 tank represents 5.5 gallons. From there I can estimate how many gallons it will take to fill it...almost to 1/10th gallon. Then I first add the 93 octane...rounding my estimate in favor of the 93. I then fill the rest with 87. And I end up with something between 90 and 91 octane. For the price of 89 octane.

i use 87 or 91. 91 is the highest as they go in California, damned EC gas!
