Default tranny fluid check

What is the correct method to check tranny fluid. I checked my manual and forum but no answer.

Check the trans fluid while the engine at idle. If you check it when the engine is cold, use the " Cold" marked on the trans dip stick.

okay, I think i over filled. The manual says 3.5 quarts. I drained and filled 3.5 and it was too much so I emptied some more out. It still seems like too much. It is about 1/2 cm over the high mark. Engine idling, went through all the gears before checking. Should I empty more? I already emptied .70 quarts.

Some old tranny fluid will stay in the torque converter and not drain out, which is why you overfilled. You'll have to keep draining until you reach the correct level on the stick.

A trick some mechanics use is to measure the amount of tranny fluid drained, then put in new fluid equal to the amount. Do that next time.
