But I'll tell you from my present experience. I have a 2001 ES300 w/ over 94,000 miles, and switched to synthetic oil when I passed the 90K mark a couple months ago. I haven't had any problems with it, and from what I hear, synthetic oil is recommended for cars with higher mileage. Also, if you feel that synthetic oil is not cutting it for you, you are OK to switch back to dino oil; don't fall for the myth that once you switch to synthetic, you stick to it permanently. Hope this info helps out

It used to be you would run dino for about two changes with a new car, and then switch to synthetic. Now cars come pre-loaded with it.
However, with older cars, anytime is a good time to switch to synthetic.
The one thing you have to think about it what brand and what weight. For my 99 RX, it depends on the location and environment, but I have always used Mobil 1. For your vehicle a 5W-30 and maybe a 10W-30 might be good.

FYI, I'm using Mobil-1 10W-30 synthetic with a OEM Toyota oil filter.

As far as I know that's correct harrier.....however those ES owners who have higher milage perfer to use 10W30 as it's slightly thicker & I've heard no complaints from them.

The manual says that 5W-30 is preferred. 10W-30 is listed as a usable grade, however, there is a precaution note about using it in extremely low temperatures (<0°C).

The preferred oil is fine but also is the 10-30 since with a synthetic the pour point is like -40 and the pumping is like -20...More then most need.
So if using a synthetic oil, either one is fine.

mburn is correct....however if the 'thicker' 10W 30 still bothers you in very cold climates in the winter, that's easy to get around.....consider inatalling a block heater, they are fairly cheap.
