Default Lexus ES250, cam and crank seals: 2vZ-FE.

its official, Jason at JP Imports in Dallas says that the cam and crank seals are bad on my 1990 2.5L 2vz-Fe V6 (he is 95% Sure)...ok, i can live with that. for what it will cost to repair, i can probably come right up to the value of the car...im still ahead considering what i paid.

and if i am not, ill consider it a lesson learned. .

however...the thing is, im totally broke. i have no way to pay him at the moment. is it ok for me to drive with these bad seals, providing im putting the oil in it that it needs?? i do check it every day, before i leave for work and then before i leave work to come home...adding if nessecary.

thougts?? facts??? opinions??

i have driven cars with bad seals before for quite some time...they never had issues, but i dont know much about toy's...please help.

Car is in Sig.

I'm going to move this to the Maintenance forum and hopefully one of the experts there will help answer your question

You can certainly drive it with leaking seals... It also depends on how badly they are leaking, though. At worst, oil could get on the tbelt... but it would take a hell of a leak for that to happen. Otherwise, its just going to be leaking all over the place... if you can handle that... then by all means, drive away

Does this ES250 have a tremendous amount of miles? Is this a problem with older lexus V8s as well?

Cam seals on older V8 hold up pretty good. I've seen V8 engine with 250k miles no cam seals leak.

yeah, its not leaking onto the TB i dont think, i havent had an issue, it just spits grey smoke out of the wheel wells. there are pussled of oil sitting on top of the transaxle and about 6 drip points off of the frame on the right hand side. there is also a drop coming from the bottom of the Tranny/engine seal, but im pretty sure its residual, and not a rear main. (wee discussed this on the phne JP, i wil bring it to you as soon as i have a chance.

and i fixed the main cause of the leaks. the car still had the factory PCV valve in it...no wonder my seals were shot. i had that and the trannjy fluid drained and filled (more on this later) at a SpeeDee lube for $50. the dude went to remove the pcv valve, he just barkey tapped it with his PCV valve crimpers and the damed thing broke in half:

^thats whats left of it^

he fished the rest out of the hole and slid the new one in, and viola. (the other half of th old one stayed stuck in the hole, didnt fall into the valve cover, thank God.)

anyway, the leak has slowed considerably after the PCV valve change, now down to about 1/4 cup a day, maybe less. and the engine idles a WHOLE lot smoother.

no, it has 140,000 miles on it. unfortunately, the previous owner knew nothing about how to maintain a vehicle. i dont think he ever changed the ATX fluid. it looked like charcoal water when it came out. i thinki got to it just in time though, no probs yet and i have put about 25 city miles ont he trany since the fluid change (it was only about a 3 quart change anyway). its obvious he never changed the PCV valve (the valve above is Grey/red, not blue/pink, my camera does funny stuff with closeups)

other than that, im very pleased. also, im not sure if the TB has been changed or not, how would i go about finding that out??? i asked the previous owner and he said he doesnt knwo when it was changed last, he thought his wife had it doen around 40K ago, but he wsnt sure. im afraid to pull the cover off and look at the belt...
