1 case (6) mobil1 oil = $22.50
1 case (12) toyota oem oil = $21.48
1 mobil1 oil filter = $11.99 - 12.99
1 oem D1 filter = $2.99
I used to do all mobil1 but after i did the math, i go w/oem now. it's been about 10K miles and i cant tell the difference...

Unexpected problems can happen to ANY oil filter, not just an aftermarket brand.

I'm not sure what the 90915-YZZD1 filter is.. but I'm wondering about the Mobil 1 filter and whatever oil filter Lexus puts in the car. I'd like to switch to Mobil 1 so that I can go up to 10k miles in between oil changes in my 2008 IS 350. I bought it new in January and the car is now at 11,100+ miles and due for an oil change. My last one was during the complimentary 5,000 miles scheduled maintenance service.
My last car was an '04 Accord 4 cyl and I could go 10k miles in between oil changes on regular oil as per the manual. when I switched to Mobil 1, I still kept it right around that mileage. Looking at the manual though, I'm pretty sure the filter could go up to 20k miles.
I'm planning on buying a 5qt jug and taking it to the Lexus dealer because I'm leaving my car there anyways to have something checked out - I'm hoping they can just do the oil change on the cheap. There really isn't much else (from what I understand) that they can do on my car other than checking it out since tires can't be rotated.
Under the assumption that any oil filter I use in my IS 350 can't last that long, I would like to learn how to do my own oil changes so that I can keep the oil in there and just switch out the filter at 5k miles.

how often do you change both your mobil 1 oil and your mobil 1 filter? What do you usually pay the dealer for the oil change service if you bring in your own oil and filter

So, I am def saving money by bringing in my own oil and filter. For full synthetic oil change, my dealership charges around 120 and by bringing in my own goods I am saving about half. It depends on your dealership though, so keep that in mind.

Just change your oil regularly according to Lexus manual.
I wouldn't worry so much about the filter, as long as you use a new one every time.
What are you trying to accomplish by optimizing the filter? I'm pretty sure changes are something else will cause greater deteriment to your car rather than filter choice.
Only after you've nitpicked every other thing, such as the gas and gas additives you use, tires/tire pressure, even time spent in the sun versus covered for paint protection, then go back to nitpicking exactly which oil filter might be better.
