Default Car Died- Problem with ECM?

My car died in in traffic the other day, and would not re-start. My mechanic is a good guy, but he admits he is not sure what the problem is. The car won't start although it is getting spark and gas; He says the computer is not providing any codes, and that the source he consulted said to try the ECM.

Any idea why my car would just die and not re-start if it is not the ECM?

it would help if we knew what kind of car it is.

my first thought since no codes are showing, is did the timing belt break?
