Strange behavior with NAV system
I have a 2003 Lexus GS430. I'm not sure if this is related to my
issue, but a few months ago I upgraded the DVD on the Navigation System
to version 2004.1, which is the latest version of the map data for the
system.
This problem happens when I have set a destination to an address.
While driving with an address set for a destination, in the upper right
hand corner of the screen, it displays a count down of the distance to
the next turn. In the lower left hand corner, it displays a count down
of time and total distance to the destination.
The problem happens if I press one of the switches (not on the screen,
the physical buttons on the left) to temporarily change the Nav display
to show the Air Conditioning controls, or perhaps the audio controls.
Then, I when I hit the button to bring the map display back up, the
count down displays of distance to next turn in the upper right hand
corner, and the count down of total distance and time in the lower left
hand corner stop updating. They stay at the values they were at the
time the screen was switched, despite continuing to drive a
considerable distance.
If I hit the map button again to bring up the voice, it announces the
correct distance to the next turn, but the count down displays remain
incorrect. I noticed the GPS signal is still being received, since the
GPS icon is still displayed, so that's not the problem.
If I take no action, the numbers continue to remain fixed, until when I
eventually reach the next turn, they update and everything is fine.
Since I drive a lot of rural routes where there is considerable
distance between turns, this is an annoyance. Has anyone else noticed
this problem? I am wondering if I have a problem or if they all do
this....

I wonder what happens when you turn off the 'auto-return' feature which switches back to the MAP screen after the AUDIO or CLIMATE screen is left untouched for 20 seconds...

Lexusaudio,
I heard about that, but what I found out is that the defective DVD data disks you mention are for the next generation Nav system that I believe came out in the 2004 Lexus GS....I was told by Seawell Lexus that the generation of the Nav system in the 2003 Lexus cars did not have defective DVD data disks....Is this wrong?

Enigma354 -
Good question - I'm going to try this and see if it makes a difference.
Between your question, and the possibility I may have gotten incorrect information regarding whether the 2004.1 Map data disks for the generation of Nav system I have may have been recalled, I've gotten two great pieces of information. The helpfulness of Clublexus and its members never ceases to amaze me....

Well,
I followed Enigma354's suggestion. I set the screen settings to automatically return to the map page after pressing the "climate" or "audio" controls. Interestingly, the problem DOES NOT happen when the screen transitions back to the map! Enigma354 - Did you suspect this? How did you know, or was it just a lucky guess?
This led me to discover that the problem actually happens when pressing the "Map/Voice" button, even when the screen is already on the map. What happens is after pressing that button, the voice comes on and announces distance to the next turn, as it should, but then the distance to next turn, and time/distance to next turn stop updating. I tried this several times - it didn't happen every time, but most of the time.
I'd love it if someone could state for certain whether the 2004.1 map DVD is defective for the generation of Nav system that came with my 2003 GS 430 (Manufacture date of April 2003). I was told the defective 2004.1 DVDs were only defective for the Nav systems ( I think it is the 4th generation Nav system) starting in the 2004 model year of the GS models. Can anyone confirm this?

i have always felt from the announcement of recall campaign 4lg that if the 4.1 4th genration discs were defective then why wouldnt the 4.1 3rd genration update also be defective.? so i have been recommending to my lexus friends not to buy the 4.1 older update 86271-33033 but wait for the 4.2 or 5.1 updATE FOR THE 3RD GENRATION . if the 4.1 on the 4th generation had a problem why wouldnt the 4.1 on the older update also have a problem . i suppose the answer is that the reason the new ones dont work in the older computer is that they have a new system of putting even more data on that one disc and the new system didnt work right for the 4th genration not the 4.1 data itself. i certainly hope that is the answer but i still will not buy any 4.1 3rd genration dvd updates.

If I were you I'd seriously consider leaving the 'auto-return' on...it saves you from having to push any buttons to see the map, and plus it seems to work in your case...anyhow, glad to help and hope everything works out for your car.
