Default Over torquing Caliper bolts....

Had a terrible experience on Saturday...was slapping on a new set of brembo rotors and OEM pads...while tightening the passenger side, front caliper bolt...it snapped. Now I've done this many times in the past and always end up tightening really firm with my hands and have never had a problem...this scared me.

Luckily...I managed to play around with the movable pin to release the broken screw remnant...but was quite shaken by the experience.

Finding a replacement pin was another pain. The dealer told me that it was a special order and would take two days. Napa, Carquest, Canadian Tire and PartSource all did not carry it. Luckily again, my local Toyota dealer had a couple lying in their loose parts bin.

Do you guys know if over tightening this screw by hand is so easily possible or was it just the case of a bum screw ?

Needless to say...I now keep a spare with me

hahah, that happened to my brother. I was teaching him how to do basic maintenance, and he is a jacked up gorilla. So he tightens it with all his might, and breaks that thing. That was a huge biotch to replace. You don't need to tighten those like crazy. Use a normal length wrench like 8-10 inches long, not a 2 foot breaker bar or something. When you have it hand tight, tap it to make it turn another 1/4 turn, and you should be fine.
