Contrary to popular belief, you get more miles by buying less higher octane fuel then having more of a lower octane fuel. Gas milage increases when you use higher octane as it burns more efficiently.
So no, your theory with the 87 isnt true.

i was getting about 16 in the city stock. after deleting my egr, and keeping a very close eye on tire pressures, i get about 18-19 now, and i drive a lot harder than i used to. i have had to put 89 in it because a gas station was out once, and i was on E. i think i got about 15-16 mpg that tank.

I run nothing but 87 at nothing less than 80mph, and I always get 21mpg. City is usually 19ish.

I thought my car was out of sync when it turned up 16-18mpg in Chicago city driving/snow driving since I did compare it to my previous car, a 2000 V6 Accord that gave me 34mpg on the freeway/24 in city. (I was very surprised with the V6, Michigan City, IN to Ann Arbor, MI 200 miles exactly on 6 gallons of regular 87 octane gas)
As the temperature starts to warm up, I am getting 19-21mpg regularly, and always using 93 octane.
