Year ,model, and milages of your car. The ticking noise can be valve out of adjustment or an exhaust leak.

Sound like you need a valve adjust on the driver side, but make sure that's the problem. You can use a long screw driver/long metal object and place one end at the suspected area and one end on your ear. A valve adjustine job at the dealer will cost you around $300.00-500.00, most of the cost are from labor to remove the valve cover, check and use proper shim to adjust the valve clearance. A lot of time consuming.

A shim is a metal spacer that partially fills the gap to give you the right valve gap. From what I read, you need to purchase a set of various thickness shims, as well as special tools/tool for the adjustment. Still less expensive than having it done professionally.

My first car had no valves to adjust ('65 Saab 2-cycle). Next two cars had valves that you could adjust with a wrench and feeler gauge, and in the case of one, you needed two specially shaped wrenches ('71 VW and '72 Mercedes-Benz). Back in those days, cars that used shims were looked down on, but times change.
