K&N and M1 are Champion Labs design. But there are significant differences in addition to the 1" nut:
Filter media: K&N offers higher flow, M1 higher filter efficiency.
Anti-drain back valve: K&N silicon, M1 nitrile rubber.
I prefer K&N because effective filter efficiency is higher because oil in K&N will hardly ever be bypassed. When the oil is bypassed, by definition filtration efficiency is zero.
FRAM XG is a good filter: it is the only FRAM with metal end cap and synthetic filter material. I try the 3600 for an oversize application for 3614, same diameter just 1.4" longer. For the same price, I will add a little more oil capacity in the sump, more synthetic filter media to store more dirt, and same bypass valve PSI value.

Does the 07 LS460 have a cartridge oil filter like the 07 ES350's??? If its the cartridge type then there are no aftermarket oil filters available right now. If its the spin-on then i presume it can be cross-ref'd to the toyota 90915-YZZD3 oil filters.

I don't know why do you want aftermarket oil and air filter on your new LS460. Performance? ???.

I have cut apart several commonly used oil filters to examine their insides due to my own curiosity and boredom. I used Fram, K&N, Mobil 1 and Toyota filters. I found out that Fram filters are the poorest in quality, particularly the filter element and the thin metal walls of the filter housing.

Thanks for the pictures, time & time again Fram has been proven to be a POS. Poor construction, poor quality. The only good thing about Fram is that they are easy to find. I havn't touched anything made by Fram in years every since seeing a article online comparing different filters.

Switching back to OEM Filter
Well, after reading all these posts and checking the links, I'm definitely switching back to the OEM filter for my SC400! I have been using using the FRAM PH3614 for years now and now I find out that this is probably one of the worst filters I could possibly be using! I must admit though that I have 200k+ on my '94 and it still doesn't burn any oil, has no engine noises, etc. Maybe the Mobil 1 oil I have always used has helped through the years. But I went out yesterday to my local Lexus shop and picked up the D3 (OEM) filter for my car and put it on last night. It is definitely of higher quality and only costs $4.75. Oh well, live and learn!!!

The Toyota filter seemed to have the best overall quality. It is also of a different design than the others. This was a Toyota filter 90915-YZZD1 that came from the dealership fitted to an '03 Tacoma. I'm currently using the 90915-YZZD3 model on my car now. I'm pretty sure it is the same thing just a little longer.

my question is, is there a real advantage going 20004 over YZZD1 for an NA 2jz? the 20004 is considerably more expensive.

This post is 5 months old, and no one answered it. so, I will take a stab at it and say that the extra 8 bucks for the 20004 filter is not worth it unless you are putting down major power or running your car extremely hard. For the most part I would say the YZZD1 is plenty of protection for most people's cars.
