For now, why not just go with OEM?

It'll only be a little bit while until all companies update their inventory.

I don't know about an air filter just yet (such as K&N), but the last two versions of the LS both used the HP-1002 oil filter (incidentally same as the one for my RX), even though they don't list an application yet.

Wouldn't touch the Fram even if it were the only thing on the planet.

The OEM filters are fine, too, but for some of us (especially ES/RX owners), it can be tough to remove and put on given the location.

My uncle had at least 3 Fram oil filters actually crack and leak.

Can't say anything about the other two Fram items you metioned.

Default Frammed

Hello All,

This is my first post on the Lexus forum and I want to start off my saying hello.

I used the Ph 3614 fram filter on my 99 RX300 for 60k miles worth of oil changes and never had a problem. The grip strip enabled me to bend my arm around that mini-van placed engine's exhaust manifold and actually tighten and loosen it quite easily. Never had a problem with cracking or leaking. Maybe, those leaks and cracks were from shipping in your prior bad experiences?

We traded in the RX for an 03 GX470 and liked it so far. There are minor clunk and thump issues, but not anything worthy of warranting a trip to the dealer as of yet.

He picked them up at Fram distributor down here, so I doubt it was shipping. Needless to say he won't touch their oil filters again.

K&N is also quite easy in the case of a 99 RX.

I used to use Fram as well, until I read 4 different independent oil filter tests that all put them at or near the bottom in terms of design and filtering performance. In general, the ones to use are (in no particular order):

OEM (Imports only, use AC Delco instead for Domestics)
Mobil1
Purolator PureOne
WIX
MANN (BMW/Mini only)
K&N
AC Delco

My local source (Meijer) for Purolator filters recently dried up, so I've wound up using Mobil1 filters on all the cars I change oil in except my BMW, where I use MANN instead. If I'm in a jam and can't get a Mobil1 but need to change the oil ASAP, AC Delco is my go-to brand for the best $2 filters around. If you don't want to pony up the $5-10 for a premium filter, I'd recommend sticking with them.

I have cut apart several commonly used oil filters to examine their insides due to my own curiosity and boredom. I used Fram, K&N, Mobil 1 and Toyota filters. I found out that Fram filters are the poorest in quality, particularly the filter element and the thin metal walls of the filter housing.

The insides of Mobil 1 and K&N filters are identical. The only real difference is that the welded nut on the K&N filter makes it easier to install.

The Toyota filter seemed to have the best overall quality. It is also of a different design than the others. This was a Toyota filter 90915-YZZD1 that came from the dealership fitted to an '03 Tacoma. I'm currently using the 90915-YZZD3 model on my car now. I'm pretty sure it is the same thing just a little longer.

I would love to be able to still get some of the older (now discontinued apparently) 90915-20004 filters that had foam filter elements that are shown here at MKIV.com
