Do you follow the 3 month/3k mile oil change?

I go by 3k mile / 3month either one come first I change oil. changing oil at 5k mile or longer than 3month will shorten your car live. Dealer suggest 5k-7.5k mile for oil change is because that the time the "MAINTAIN" light or OIL light come on, most car or newer car come with warning light or reminder light for maintainance. But according to my dealer the best to change oil is still 3k mile or 3month, either one come first.

If you use synthetic and you have a well maintained engine, going longer than 3k is not a problem. Doing a used oil analysis is the only way to be sure. Using a good synthetic such as RP, RL, M1 or Syntec, I can usually go 6 months or between 5-6k miles. Oil analysis showed no abnormal wear metals, no fuel or coolant dilution and lots of life left in the oil. If you use dino and will not do an analysis, going 3mos/3k is safe. Our engines are not as harsh on the oil as some others, so oil life should not be a problem. Just make sure your engine is healthy. There are people who go 10k miles on an oil change and are doing fine, just have to do it intelligently. Its equally important to use a good filter. M1 or Pure1 for me as they easily handle the 5-6k miles.

Any of you dipsticks ever check the dipstick in your car (: HA!
....not only can you check to see if your oil is low but you can check to see if the oil is dirty. I use Mobil 1 synthetic and change around 4 to 5k.

i think that 3k rule is just for them to make money...
ive read many articles on oil and their breakdown on use... hell even the owners manual from honda toyota etc say every 5k to 7500 miles
it also depends how you run your car. i mean if you rev your engine to redline everytime then maybe it can cause some wear on oil.
and if you use badass oil you dont have to change it that often at all... i read people that run amsoil change it every 10k mile/1 year
and oil analysis show its still ok.
dont be stupid and run your car for years without changing. just make sure the oil level is fine.
i think every 3k is a waste of money.

It is a waste of money but it doesn't hurt the car. On that note, I usually don't change the oil for 5-6k miles. And that's on dino oil. I did the same with my old Accord, and I used to floor that car all the time.
Sometimes, I would forget to change the oil for 10k miles but hey, the car kept running till 189,000 miles with no signs of abnormal wear, power dropoff, or fuel economy issues. at which point I sold it since I wanted something new.

thats what i was thinking..
see the thing is, I only went about 3-4K miles in 9 months. So thats why I was thinking maybe I could wait another month or two before I change it. I also use Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30.

I change mine once a quarter (3 mo), which is about 2k miles. I do it myself so it's like 10 bucks each time. The oil comes out pretty dark and my car is old so I figure it is best for it. Shoot, we just sold a running 71 Murcury Monterey and the oil of that was changed every 2k for it's life time and it was still going strong. I think the oil changes were well worth it on that old thing and might as well do that for my current car to make it last as long as possible.
To each their own though.
