Is 1 qt. per 1200 miles cause for concern?
I'm a new Lexus owner....'03 GS300, 43K miles, and have burned a full quart in my first 1200 miles. That doesn't seem normal from the posts I've read. Are these models prone to oil burn? Should I have dealer look at since car is in warrant for another month?

It certainly wouldn't hurt to see what they'll do about it. It would be nice if they found the source of the problem (e.g., rings, valve seals, etc.) and fixed it for free.

Using Castrol 5W-30 but will probably change to synthetic. I have a 500 mile trip tomorrow so I'll have another chance to watch oil consumption..if it goes down again, I'm heading to the Lexus dealer.

Well, one other thing that comes to mind is that sometimes when I check my oil, a German 0W30 Castrol and this occurred even when I was using Mobil 1 0W40, is that sometimes not all of the oil is in the sump, even if the vehicle is dead cold in a morning start up on the way to work.

1 quart in 1200 miles is alarming. Castrol 5W-30 (I'm assuming GTX?) is a pretty thick stable oil. what kind of driving? WOT all the time? high speed highway driving? Doing a 500 mile non-stop trip will cause some oil consumption. How long has it taken to get to 1200 miles?

That is pretty high an may be indicative of other problems. Have it checked!
On a past Toyota, it would burn a half-quart every 1K miles on dino. With 10-30 synthetic, it would burn a quart those 1k miles. Compression testing revealed that 3 cylinders were hovering around 110 psi. Suspect was worn rings but it was not a shocking discovery at 180K miles. Plug fouling also indicated that oil was entering the combustion chambers.

You should have that checked out soon... Just to make sure, you should check below your car to see if there is any oil deposits... I use to have a Integra GS-R and if i hit Vtec a lot, it will burn oil...
