Default Hot weather and oil viscosity

Hey guys,

I was just wondering what viscosity of oil you are running, especially in the southern US?

I've always ran Mobile 1 5W30 in my 1993 SC400 (which is recommended). I now only drive it in the summer and it has been getting VERY VERY hot up here. Like in the 40 degrees celcius (104 fahrenheit) range. So, since it isn't being used in the winter and it is getting so hot in the summer, should I switch to 10W30???

I don't know a lot about this, so feel free to give me some technical advice.

Thanks,

Devin

Im certainly no oil expert, but i would say that a switch to 10w30 or even 10w40 would be appropriate in temps above 100.

SAE oil weight are range, for example, Castrol Syntec 0w-30 (German Castrol) is thicker than most 5w-30.
Read Motor Oil 101, 102 by AE Haas, this is an excellent web site to become knowledgeable about motor oil in a short time.

I take it the 1993 SC in question here has a lot of miles on it. This would be the case on high-mileage engines even if it were not particularly hot outside. Thicker oil helps seal up areas around worn valves, bearings, and piston rings, lessening the amount and severity of oil leaks. High-mileage oil also contains packages in it that help old seals swell up and keep their integrity.

High mileage oil is marketed by oil companies to bump up the profit margin.
oil conditioning additives are in almost every PCMO sold over the counter. See a laundary list of basic additive package. The list includes seal swell agent.

Thanks Tuned RX for those two sites! It reversed some of what I thought I knew about oil.

Wow! Great resource. I have to spend the time to read the entire manuscript! Thanks.

Even the manual for the SCs call for 10w-30 when temps go above 100F. I run 10W-40 for my car in the summers where temps can hover in the 90s and 100+ in the summer.

I would run a quality synthetic oil such as Mobil 1 and run a 10W-30 viscosity.
