What brand and model of ramps are best? I have a GS350 and want to buy a set to do oil&filter changes. I bought a pair at Wal-Mart that were wide enough, however the car just kept pushing them forward on my garage floor when I tried them. Any suggestions?

 

Rhino Ramps. They sell car ramps and SUV ramps. I opted for the SUV ramps since it was an extra $10 and they're built even better than the regular Rhino Ramps. I also have issues with my car pushing the ramps forward, and even crashed into a chair in my garage in my attempts the last time I changed my transmission fluid. I've tried putting rubber beneath the ramps, and various starting positions and speeds, so I'm not sure what would be best. This is one situation where FWD>RWD.

 

Anybody try these?

 

I've seen how you could make your own ramps out of wood. I don't remember the site but it had pics and looked like it worked out well especially if you have a ground effects package. It went something like this. You would buy your lumber stock(several feet) 2 by whatever was wider then the width of your tires. Cut the stock in various lengths. 1st piece(longest) was maybe 4 foot long on the bottom. Then screw the next piece on that say 3 foot long keeping the ends flush on one side. Then so on and so on so that you have several pieces that look like stairs on one end and flush on the other until you got the custom height you wanted. On the top piece you would screw on two pieces of wood to use as a tire stop. Repeat for the other side and no more slipping ramps as the weight of the car on the stairs would keep the ramp from moving. I was going to build a set but there are two disadvantages with these. They would be pretty heavy and bulky to store. Would be strong as hell though as long as you used long enough screws or lag bolts.

 

I had a similar idea, but I already had some ramps.
All I needed was a way to lift the front up so I'd clear the top of the ramps.

I bought some plastic ones from Autozone sometime ago that had rubber feet on the backs... never had an issue with them moving...

Those are the same ramps I use, but they don't get any traction for me.

 

Did you lose the rubber inserts that go in the front of the ramps??

I've never had any traction problems with the inserts in.

me too... once I got them lined up incorrectly (Trying to do it myself without help...) and it pushed one until they were lined up... but that was only once...

 

Bit the bullet and purchased a set of "Race Ramps" from Discount Ramps.Com. Pricy @ $200 delivered. They are much longer @ 56" than all the others on the market. The company that sells them tells me all the Rhinos and other inexpensive ramps on the market push forward when you have them on any slicker surface because they are too short thereby making the ramp angle too severe. I'll try these tomorrow when I change the oil&filter for the first time and report back.

 

Used them just now for our GS350's first oil and filter change. They worked great! No slippage and they are definitely worth $200 in my opinion.

 

I'll add this though. Since my car is not lowered, I place the ramps directly in front of the wheel before moving the car. By this I mean I wedge the ramp under the wheel then move the car. Unsure if this makes any difference.

But my neighbor uses mine as well with his lowered Mazdaspeed 6 without wedging them and he has had no problems as well.
